The seven members of the Class of 2012 presented their class gift to the School on May 16 at a special ribbon cutting ceremony. The two new octagonal picnic tables, donated by the eighth graders and their familes, will allow Barnesville students to enjoy lunch outside for years to come.
Barnesville's 7th and 8th graders created Peeps Dioramas for their Language Arts assignment in March. The Peeps Project is based on the Washington Post's contest, with a few additional requirements. Like the Post's contest, the dioramas must express a famous occurrance or scene be it historic, current, future or a nod to pop culture. All the characters must be Peeps bunnies or chicks. Unlike the Post, the students are required to complete their projects in a limited time period and incorporate at least three reused, recycled or repurposed materials. The students must also provide a written abstract of their project and give an oral presentation to the class. The Peeps dioramas are judged by parents and faculty and staff. The winners were announced March 26.
To celebrate Pi Day on March 14 (3.14), the Middle School held a competition to see who could recite the most numbers of Pi. Leah W. came in first place with 62 digits, Joy R. was second with 52, and JoJo D. was third with 46. After the comepitition, the students ate Pie. (In a second chance try, JoJo acheived 88.) The students also created a paper-ring Pi symbol for the celebration. Congrats to all who gave Pi a try!
The annual third grade Parade of Books was a veritable who's who in American history. Each third grader chose an influential figue in American history, researched their life and accomplishments and created a float representing their character. On March 6, the students, dressed in costume, gave brief speeches in their figures voice and paraded their floats in front of an audience of parents, teachers and other students. The figures include: Althea Gibson, Amelia Airhart, Annie Oakley, Babe Ruth, President Barak Obama, Benjamin Franklin, Bessie Coleman, Buffalo Bill, Clara Barton, Davy Crockett, Duke Kahanamoku, Eleanor Roosevelt, Georgia O'Keefe, Harry Houdini, Jim Henson, Lou Gehrig, Louis Armstrong, Michael Collins, Milton Hershey, Muhammad Ali, Philo Farnsworth, Ruby Bridges, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, and William Beebe.
The 8th graders and Barnesville and Green Acres Peruvian exchange students explored historic Frederick for a morning using their cameras to capture the sites and experiences. After a brief respite from the cold at a local restuarant, the students served lunch at the Frederick Rescue Mission. This was the 8th graders second time this school year helping at the Mission.
8th Grade Language Arts Author's Projects: Students selected a favorite author to research. They generated interview questions with short answer responses, wrote a five paragraph biographical essay, created a tribute page, and delivered an oral presentation posing as their respective authors.
7th Grade Language Arts Disability Projects: Students selected a notable with a disability to research. They became experts on their individuals and wrote a five paragraph biographical essay, created a six panel informational brochure and wrote a short overview to deliver orally to visiting parents, students and faculty. Students brought in props or integrated technology to enhance their presentations!
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., Barnesville students celebrated Peace Week from Jan. 9-13. The topic this year was Take a Stand, Lend a Hand! Let's End Bullying. Activities included writing and performing skits, recording ways to combat bullying on paper hands, constructing a Peace Tree; a few students even wrote poems and a rap song. The week culminated in a special all-school Peace Parade & Ceremony where students shared their ideas, performed their works and lit candles for Peace.
Students working with Artist in Residence, Kevin Reese, on a student designed and constructed Mobile. The Mobile is now installed at BlackRock Center for the Arts through the 2011-2012 season. During Barnesville's Arts & Academics Night, May 24, 2012, the Mobile will be permanently installed in The Barnesville School Library.
