| Library News | | Dear Library Volunteers and Wanna Be's, Here we are ready to begin a new year at The Barnesville School Library! I am looking forward to working with you during this school year and appreciate so much your generous gift of time and all your talents. Speaking of gifts of time, I am pleased to announce that Kelly Greenawalt will continue on in her position as library volunteer coordinator. She will be contacting you in the near future to schedule you for library duty or you can reach her at the phone number below. Together, we strive to make the students’ library visits an enjoyable and successful experience. With that as our goal, I ask that all volunteers attend a library training session on Friday, September 17 from 8:00 to 10 AM. The focus of the training will be on best practices, book processing, brief review of the new library software and an overview of Grandparents' Day. Thanks in advance for saying yes to library! | | From Our Head of School | | Welcome back to Barnesville! We begin Barnesville’s 42nd year of operation on a very strong note. The campus looks wonderful, the teachers are ready to teach, and the whole place is humming with positive energy. There are many familiar faces on our faculty and staff this year, as well as some new members to the Barnesville community. And we are making steady progress on our outdoor classroom project. In the very near future the old bike shed will be torn down, opening up the play area immensely. Keep watching for further updates on the construction! As we begin our new school year, I want to share a story with you, a true story from a few years back. Our Facilities Director Bernie Weintraub had to replace a toilet handle in the boys’ bathroom. As it happened, the one he used to replace it with was golden in color, which didn’t particularly match the original, but it worked just fine. Not long after he replaced the handle, I heard two young boys leaving the bathroom, and the one said to the other, “Really! There’s a new toilet handle, and it’s made out of real gold!” What are the lessons here? Check your assumptions, get the facts, and when in doubt, go to the source. Of course the toilet handle wasn’t made out of gold - we’re not Trump Towers, and we have better things to do with our budget! But had these students thought to ask, they would have quickly learned the truth. It’s our goal, after all, to raise our students to be critical thinkers and truth seekers. So how can you as parents model critical thinking for your children? First, please take the time to read through our newly revised Student Handbook / Faculty Directory. Each summer we review this document to ensure that it clearly explains our practices and policies. And if it’s not in the handbook, please let us know! Second, I urge you to talk directly with the people most involved with your child’s education, your teachers. This communication is so essential to a positive school year, and we rely upon this direct and honest connection to reach each student’s needs. Finally, there are many staff members and administrators who can provide you with help. In the front office, Karol Nave is happy to answer your questions or pass them along to the right people, such as Assistant Head of School Vickie Roos or Division Director Emeritus Ann Kupferberg. May your school year be joyful, John Huber PS – I’ll be making a return appearance in the dunk tank for our Back to School Picnic this Sunday the 12th. Let’s hope this time that the water is a little warmer than it was last year! I look forward to seeing everyone this Sunday. | |
| Middle School | | Our middle school students are off to a great start and have a couple of busy days already! Our eighth grade students began the first day of school by leading their first "Morning Meeting" for the entire student body and they will continue this job through the month of September. We have had two middle school meetings already to talk about a variety of topics such as: Student Council Elections, Back to School Dance on Friday, October 8th from 7:00-10:00 PM for 6th through 8th grade students, middle school ski trip which will take place on Friday, February 4th, the Fall Play production, middle school athletics, and the students all signed up for a Club. We are excited about the upcoming year which will not only be filled with great learning opportunities, but also many team building and social activities which are so important to our middle school students! I hope to see many of you this Sunday at the Back to School Picnic! | |

| Facilities and Transportation | | In October 1986, Congress enacted the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). This law required all schools to develop regulations to respond to any asbestos that might be in their facilities. In the process, schools were to develop management plans to address any potential hazards in their buildings, implement responses in a timely manner, and inform constituencies on a regular basis. At Barnesville’s initial inspection, it was discovered that some of the floor tiles in the Museum building contained a small amount of asbestos, so we established an asbestos management plan. Since then, we have removed or encapsulated most of the material in question, and the remaining is regularly monitored. During our last AHERA inspection, The Barnesville School has been found to be in full compliance. This note is our annual reminder to parents and staff of the status of our asbestos plan. As Facilities Manager, I maintain our records and work with AHERA representatives during routine periodic surveillance. If you have any questions about our plan, please feel free to contact me, and I will be happy to answer any questions. | Please follow the posted traffic pattern for the AM drop off and PM pick up of your children. Also remember that during AM drop off, your children must always exit your car on the curb side, and never on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The driver’s side is a thru lane for traffic. |
