Hive Fills with New Bees

Twenty-four happy new students have joined the first grade teachers for a year full of learning, wonder and fun. They are beginning to learn and settle into the daily routine.

Please remember that in first grade we do have a snack each day.

Please try to send a healthy snack and refrain from those high in sugar.

The first grade has physical education on Monday and Tuesday and will need to wear sneakers and appropriate clothing. If girls wear skirts or dresses that day, they should wear shorts underneath. We will also have library on Thursday. Children will be checking out two books each week as long as they return books previously checked out. Books can be returned to the classroom prior to Tuesday if they have been read and the children are done with them.

In addition, the first grade has Art on Friday, and Music twice a week.

First grade students have homework everyday except for Friday and it is expected to be returned to school Tuesday through Friday. Part of the homework expectation is that they read or be read to for 20
minutes each day including weekends.

If you need to reach the teachers you can send a note in your child’s homework folder, email us or phone the school and leave a voice
message.

School Supplies Arrive

Each first grade student had a list of supplies to be brought to school. Please be sure that your child has brought in all needed supplies. All of your child’s outerwear such as jackets, coats, boots, sweaters, and
sweatshirts should also have your child’s name in them for easy return should they be misplaced or left behind.

Please be sure to label lunchboxes and all components of the lunch box as well. (thermos, icepack)

Thank you for your help with this as it will facilitate the proper return of your child’s belongings.

1st Art

First graders are going to jump right in and start learning about Mexico and its artifacts. They will first trace a Mexican map and add the water and land bodies that surround it as well as symbols for the basic terrains in Mexico. They will also show where Mexico City is. After that we will discuss Amate Bark painting and learn how to draw a variety of birds which they can use to adorn their paintings. We will also learn about Amate Bark crop spirits. All Mexican artifacts made in class will be saved to put on display at the first grade Mexican marketplace for Cinqo de Mayo Day. Artwork that doesn't have to do with Mexico will be sent home immediately.
