From the Teacher's Desk
Ellen Landriau, Kindergarten Teacher
The year has gotten off to a great start! It was wonderful seeing you at September partnership conferences and at Back-to-School Night. I am excited to work with you to enhance your child’s learning.

The first field trip of the year is coming up on Oct. 27 as the Kindergarten will venture out to Homestead Farm for a day of learning about plants, animals and pumpkin picking.

We have already been very busy learning our classroom routines for lunch time, play time and circle time. We are working to master walking respectfully when we travel in the hallways. In addition, we are reviewing the alphabet letters and basic math concepts.

This newsletter will be available on the website every month to keep you up to date on what we are learning, where we are going and how we are growing. Happy reading!

Language Arts

The children have been working on letter recognition, rhyming words, and poetry. The focus of our September theme was All About Me. The children listened to different versions of some of the same stories, for example Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Kittens, and Three Billy Goats GruffWe also listened to The Enormous Turnip, The Giant Carrot, The Big Pumpkin, Henny Penny and Chicken Little. They compared and contrasted the stories and illustrations to develop their critical thinking skills as well as to improve their comprehension.

The October theme is Colors All Around. The children will listen to stories about colors around the world.
Mathematics

September was devoted to sorting and classifying. The children learned to group objects according to properties such as color, size and shape. They learned to identify same and different. They are also learning graphing skills.

In October, we will learn about patterns and positions. The children will learn to identify and make patterns with colors, sizes, shapes, and rhythms.

Spanish
Senora Campos
Spanish class was running very well the first month of school. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know all of the students in my classes.

During October students will learn about colors, shapes, numbers 1 to 10, common courtesy words and phrases. We will continue practicing commands about behavior rules, routines and traditions. We will also read story books and sing songs that I hope will make learning Spanish a joyful experience for the students.

Thank you for your support.
Music
Nancy Taylor, Music Teacher
The Kindergarten students have enjoyed playing singing games together. They have been singing from books like Over In the Meadow (Langstaff) and Frog Went A-Courtin' (Langstaff), where they can follow the words on a page, and also see illustrations of what they are singing about. They sang songs incorporating their own names, songs about animals, and about colors. They also do a great job with action songs!
Physical Education

The Kindergarteners have worked hard on staying in their own personal space (Bubbles). They have learned and mastered new skills like hopping on one foot and rocket jumps. They are having fun learning to throw and catch. They have been throwing everything from small balls to big dice! They can look forward to some outdoor time in P.E. soon!!

Kindergarten Art
Mary Waldhorn, Art Teacher
Welcome to the Kindergarteners! They will have art with me every Thursday morning for 35 minutes. We spent our first three classes learning about line. Our first day we connected dots to make lines and practiced making zigzag, loopy and other various lines. We also acted out kinds of lines and created lines after listening to sounds. Our second class we took line strips and created line sculptures. Our third class we talked about the letter S and did line and shape abstract art in the style of "construction" painter, Frank Stella. We will be doing art of a famous artist corresponding to the Kindergarten letter of the week. At the end of the year we will have an art exhibit of the students work and we will go see art by the artists we have learned about at the National Gallery of Art.
