The Adventures of Barnsie by Auveen and Carissa

Barnsie went on a treasure hunt in the library with his first grade class. He went home with Auveen and went to the swimming pool. Next he went home with Carissa. Barnsie went to the baseball game and to tennis practice. Barnsie went to the pet store to buy a pink fish. Then Barnsie read a story to Carissa, but Carissa had to help him.

Library by Lindsey and Kai

Library is on Thursday. We walk in line. Mrs. Barr reads us a story. Then we get two books. Then we go back to our classroom.

Class Jobs by Julia, Miranda and Emily

Two people take the books back to the library. One person erases the board. Two people wash the lunch table. Everyone washes their desk, puts their chairs up, recycles and picks up trash.

Class Pets by Lucy and Toby

We feed the fish stinky fish food. The hermit crab barely moves from his heater. Moses the axylotl stays in his tank. Bruce the anole changes color.

Science by Brooke, Colin and Max

In science we learned about animal defenses. A stink bug's defense is stink. We like learning about animals.

Buddies by Alexandra, Charlie and Soren

We like our buddies because they are fun. When we saw them we made puzzles. Our buddies rule!

Poetry Journals by Jenna and Gillian

At school we read the poems. And we highlight the repeated words. The poems are fun. We like the poems.

Social Studies
by Kiran and William

So far we have been learning about compasses in social studies. Some of our friends have been bringing in compasses. We have been learning about the directions from a compass, like North, West, South, and East.
Spanish
Senora Campos
The Spanish class has been running very well the first month of school. I enjoyed meeting and getting to know all students in my classes.

During October students will learn about La escuela (the school), classroom objects, school rooms and introduction of questions related to classroom words and numbers. We will also read story books and sing songs about Dia de los muertos that I hope will make learning Spanish a joyful experience for the students.

Thank you for your support.
Music
Nancy Taylor, Music Teacher
The school year in Music Class has begun with the sounds of students singing greeting songs in several different languages. The students have also been listening to music from the Medieval Music Style Period (500 - 1430 A.D.). Their responses to the strong, ancient sounds have been absolutely wonderful. Next, we will move on to the Renaissance Style Period. Since September is "Kindness Month" at Barnesville School, they have been singing "Glad To Have A Friend Like You" (Hall) (from
Free To Be...You And Me by Marlo Thomas) and "Try A Little Kindness" (Sapaugh/Austin). Beatles songs are becoming a staple in our musical diet, and what a good way to begin the year - "Octopus's Garden," for example, and "Here Comes the Sun," and even "Hey Jude."
First Grade Art, October
Mary Waldhorn, Art Teacher
Welcome to our first grade artists! I had so much fun teaching your children in kindergarten, I'm looking forward to our first grade year together. We started the year with a rain picture which we made during a deluge! The children also did a fun fall picture using ripped paper after listening to the Leo Leoni story of Six Crows about a farmer, crows and a scarecrow with a big problem. Most of our work this year will revolve around artifacts of Mexico. We made a Mexican map and learned about the Mexican flag. In October we will do Amate bark bird paintings and crop deity cut-outs. We will  learn about the celebration of the "Day of the Dead" and create artwork about it. If time permits we'll also do something for Halloween.
Physical Education
David Martin, PE Teacher
As the year begins, the first graders are hard at work learning new skills. They are working on moving around the gym while keeping their own personal space. They are working in small groups on throwing and catching, using many different objects. They are also being introduced to many exercises that will be used throughout the year. First grade is on the move!!

Homework Guidelines
Homework serves multiple purposes in first grade. One is to teach your child the responsibility of completing and returning their work. Another purpose is to reinforce the skills being worked on in class. Homework assignments are gradually introduced the first couple of weeks of school. After that, your child will have math, reading, spelling, and 20 minutes of independent or family reading most nights, Monday through Thursday. There are no homework assignments on weekends other than reading 20 minutes each day.

Please set aside a special place, provide the proper materials to do each assignment, and schedule a routine time to do homework. Parents should act as guides for the work to be done, helping your child understand the assignment and then letting them work independently.

It is your child’s responsibility to write their name on each assignment, put their completed work into their homework folder, place it in their totebag and return it to school the next day. Gentle reminders until these steps are automatically done by children are invaluable in assisting them to develop lifelong organizational skills.

Aside from reading for 20 minutes daily, homework should take no longer than 30 minutes. If your child is taking longer than this, please let us know. Sometimes the solution is as simple as reteaching a skill. If you have any concerns, please let us know by placing a note in your child’s homework folder, contacting Chris Donza at 301-972-0342 ext. 253 or contacting Linda Birkholz at 301-972-0342 ext. 231.
