Children Helping Children
Each year first grade children help families in need by working to earn food items to bring to school one week in November. If you would like your child to participate, please think of extra chores your first grader can do to earn food items to donate to a food bank! All nonperishable food items are greatly appreciated. Suggested items are:
  • Monday, Nov. 7: Canned or dried fruits
  • Tuesday, Nov. 8: Canned vegetables
  • Wednesday, Nov. 9: Protein, such as tuna, peanut butter or beans
  • Thursday, Nov. 10: Soups
  • Friday, Nov. 11: Starches, such as rice or pasta and sauce

Immediately after we finish the food drive, we will continue to do extra chores, but will earn quarters. We will collect and total up our quarters at school. On Nov. 30, we will shop at WalMart with our buddies to buy holiday gifts for a child who would otherwise not receive presents.

Magical Mr. Kerns

I put his head in his hands. He went to the monster park.

Music
The students in Grade One have continued to listen to the sounds of Medieval music; this has naturally led to an introduction to the languages of Middle English and Latin! They enjoyed a few Halloween songs, and are learning songs about Autumn, and snow, and other seasonal subjects. And thinking ahead to Grandparents Day coming up here at Barnesville School, they are learning a song or two for singing especially to their grandparents. They have learned to play singing/dance games together such as Two In a Boat, Little David Play On Your Harp, and At the Bottom of the Sea.
Physical Education
David Martin, PE Teacher
The students are being introduced to lifetime fitness activities and exercises. We will discuss healthy eating and lifestyle habits too. This includes cardiovascular fitness, strength training and disease prevention. We will begin a soccer unit which will focus on skill development, dribbling, body coordination, teamwork, and offensive and defensive strategies. Their grades are comprised of the following: gross motor skills and daily personal performance (skill, listening and following directions, and sportsmanship).
Spanish
Senora Campos, Spanish Teacher
Students in first grade begin the month by studying the human body. Throughout the unit we will cover body parts, sensations (pain, cold, heat, etc..) and descriptions of the body. We will play games and sing songs to help gain familiarity with the different body parts and learn them. Additionally, we will learn about “El Dia de Gracias” (Thanksgiving).
First Grade Art
The first graders just finished learning how Amate bark is used to make Mexican artifacts by painting colorful bird designs on crumpled brown paper which simulated the bark. The also learned about Mexican cut out crop figures, intricate cut designs with images of crops such as pineapples and bananas employed. These figures were guardians of a safe harvest. The children did a very good job drawing and cutting out their figures. At the end of October we also did an image about the Mexican celebration for The Day of the Dead. In November the children will use patterns to create a colorful serape design and learn about the famous stone Aztec calendar. They will make a circular calendar design with an Aztec sun god at it's center and revolving circles of our seasons, months of the year and special holidays.
Maynes Farm
Dear families, Thank you for providing us with the field trip to Maynes Farm. Thanks also to Dr. Walton and Ms. Edwards for being our chaperones and to Mrs. Woods for driving our bus.
Meet the Teachers
Mrs. Lacey Metzger and Mrs. Cathy Kennett are both working on education degrees. This includes presenting lessons and working with students at Barnesville. Sometimes we are lucky and they work with first graders!
