Maryland Science Center Field Trip

  • Caroline's favorite experience was pretending she was the submarine captain because she liked looking through the periscope and pressing the emergency button.
  • Della's favorite experience was in the Kid's Room.  She liked using static electricity and making her hair go up.
  • Emma's favorite experience was trying to lift herself with the pulleys.
  • Grace's favorite experiences were the mermaid lair and driving a submarine in the under the sea cave.
  • Greer's favorite experience was watching electricity move between two metal tubes inside a glass tube.
  • Jessi's enjoyed fishing in the Kid's Room.  There was a magnet on the fishing pole and another on the fish.
  • Mira's favorite part of being at the Maryland Science Center was being with my daddy, the chaperone.
  • Sam's favorite part was an optical illusion when it looked like he could catch a spring, but the "spring" was only reflected light.
  • Sean's favorite part of the Maryland Science Center was the ball course by the entrance because it had a loop and all kinds of crazy obstacles that the ball had to go on.
  • Serena's favorite experience was pulling herself on the pulleys because some were hard and some were easy.
  • Sydney's favorite experience was in the submarine of the under sea cove.  She did the controls to be a diver and saw sea creatures and seaweed.

Spring Poetry

 Spring by Caroline

Spring is foggy and muddy.

Spring reminds me of flowers fully blooming and fluffy small chicks.

Spring makes me want to go fishing in Bermuda, swim at the beach and play outside with Coconut.

  Spring by Della

Spring is bright and sunny.

Spring reminds me of birds flocking to birdfeeders and shells in the ocean.

Spring makes me want to walk to the pool, run to the park and roll down the hill.

  Spring by Emma

Spring is sunny and bright.

Spring reminds me of butterflies fluttering their double-heart wings and beautiful bluebirds flying in the sky.

Spring makes me want to ride my bike with my family, go to the beach and make a flower garden.

Spring makes me want to pick flowers, catch butterflies and fish on the dock at Deep Creek Lake.

Slim Goodbody Assembly

We saw “Lighten up: The Great American Nutrition Musical” to learn about the importance of making good exercise and food choices. We learned a four step plan to make a change in our eating and exercising choices. They are:

1-Set a goal.

2-Make a list (of options)

3-Make a choice

4-Follow through

Spanish
During the month of May we will begin our final unit of this school year called “Sports”. In this unit we will learn about popular sports. Students will continue practicing our song and dance for our Spanish Night.
Physical Education
First grade is continuing to work hard and learn new things.  They worked hard on mastering their hockey skills last month! They even got the opportunity to play a few games! They will be learned about lacrosse next!! As the weather changes and warmer weather comes our way, we will be using the outdoors to continue to learn about different skills.  Make sure that on PE days your child has appropriate shoes!
Art
May sees the culmination of learning about artifacts of Mexico with the celebration of Cinco de Mayo Day where you will see all of your child's art work displayed in the first grade area. We will finish off the year with some fun drawing and outdoor art assignments. We will listen to some of "The Harold and the Purple Crayon" stories without viewing the illustrations and make up our own pictures to go with the stories. If weather permits will do some lovely flower paintings as well. I wish all a fun summer and look forward to working with your children in the second grade!
Music
In Music Class, the 1st Grade students have been listening to the sounds of sixtets and septets.  The sixtet presented to them the unusual, "ear-stretching" sounds of avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Kreuzspiel" (meaning "Crossplay", a method of composing atonal music).  They continue to work on their solfege skills, and on interpreting "picture symbol charts" which present to them the basic building blocks of a song.  They plan to welcome Spring with May Day festivities, including celebratory singing and dancing, on May 6 beginning at 10:30 a.m.  You are all invited!
