From Our Head of School

For years, Middle School Director Vickie Roos and I have counseled families to begin their search for secondary schools at the beginning of a child’s 7th grade year. This gives enough time for a leisurely look at the options, without the immediacy of filling in applications. I now find myself having to practice what I preach, as the parent of a 7th grade student! So this coming weekend we’ll be heading to another open house to learn about the strengths of one of the many independent schools in the greater Washington area.

One measure of a school’s strength that isn’t always visible to parents is faculty professionalism. Certainly one can look at a faculty’s degrees and college institutions to get some measure of the teachers’ credentials. But is that same faculty engaged in reflective practice? Do the teachers take an active role in their own learning? Do they lead the way for their peers by presenting at workshops?

And so, with that question in mind, I thought I’d share what some of our own faculty members have been up to these past three months.

  • Diane Jordan, Chris Donza, and Nancy Bowen – the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Annual Conference
  • Melanie Gekas, Elizabeth Crawford, Cindy Barr, Mary Waldhorn, and Nick Diaz – the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS) Annual Conference in Baltimore. At this conference, Mary led a presentation titled “Teaching Peace and Social Justice Through Art and Meditation” and Nick led one titled “Using MATHCOUNTS Materials in the Middle School Classroom”
  • Elizabeth Crawford – “Crafting Writers K-6” through AIMS
  • Lynda Forman – “Bringing the Classroom Outside” through AIMS
  • Ann Pause – continuing graduate course work on curriculum development at Hood College
  • Mykel Hitselberger – National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Regional Conference
  • Dona Kaufman – “Helping Kids, Teens, and Adults Live Well with ADHD” through the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA)

Many of these opportunities have been made possible through the Jaralyn Hough Professional Development Fund, established upon the retirement of our beloved former head. And as you think about gift giving this holiday season, you are certainly welcome to make a contribution to the Hough Fund in a teacher’s name.

From the Admissions Office

Believe it or not...it's high season in the Admissions Office! A special thank you to those Barnesville families who have already shared their referral cards with their friends and neighbors. A personal referral is our very best marketing tool. Don't forget, you can get more referral cards from the Marketing office.

Calling all siblings! We have had a tremendous interest in our Early Childhood, three year old program for next year. Since this program has limited capacity, we encourage current Barnesville families, with younger siblings, to stop by the Admissions office and pick up an application packet.
