From Our Head of School

For the last Bits of the calendar year, I normally keep it pretty short, knowing that many (most?) families have their attention focused on the upcoming Winter Break, and that this might be the most unread Bits of the school year. Despite this, I wish to bring two items to your attention.

Coming up in January, I will be again holding my annual Coffees with the Head of School. This is your opportunity to speak with me directly with your questions and comments – the agenda is open for your thoughts. Coffees will be held in the Media Center (Resource Room) on Friday mornings, following the calendar available on the website and in your printed calendar. Our first coffee on January 8th will be for parents of students in Early Childhood through Kindergarten. Each coffee will begin at 7:30 am, but you need not arrive right at the start – this early time is to accommodate parents who may need to leave early to go to work, etc. Feel free to arrive any time between 7:30 and 8:30 in the morning. If Early Bird child care is needed, please contact me ahead of time so that I may let our staff know to welcome your child that day (at no charge). I look forward to talking with you!

And, in most joyous news, I want to pass along an update about a former Barnesville student. As many of you may know, Justin Thornton ’05, older brother of Allyssa Thornton ’14, was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia a few years back. The entire Barnesville community came out strong to support him with fundraisers and bone marrow drives, and many of us still have our green “Support Justin” bracelets. Yesterday afternoon, his mother Nina shared with me the happy news – Justin’s bone marrow transplant was officially declared a success by his doctor, he is now cancer free, and he has returned to Good Counsel full-time for his senior year. He is delighted to have the chance to play football again!

On that most happy note, I wish you safe travels, and a joyful (and restful!) Winter Break.
