Happy New Year! It’s Great to Come Together Again!

Hope all of you had a wonderful time spending the holiday break with family and friends. I know we are all well rested, rejuvenated, and are “rarin” to go into a new year.

Loose-leaf binders should have been cleaned out last month and we are beginning to fill them again. If your student has not cleaned out their notebook, please help them do so immediately.

It looks like the cold weather is back and it is going to be really cold on the playground. Please take note of the weather and have your child dress appropriately. If there is snow on the ground, pack the boots for we will be romping around and getting wet. Perhaps some extra socks, tucked in the bottom of their schoolbag, can help for that cold, wet, enjoyable recess.

Looking at our upcoming program as a whole, we will continue to move forward in all content areas of the curriculum. In Regions we will be completing the Northeast people, test again and then head into the Middle West states with the prairies, buffaloes, Mt. Rushmore, Great Lakes, Dust Bowl and more. If you are traveling in that area, we would love to have more postcards to display.

In Reading Level I we will continue reading the novel The Hollow Tree and moving at a faster pace to accomplish our reading goals for the trimester. Level II will be reading the “American Stories” theme. The Book Report for this month will be reading the Craftsman book. (See notes below)

In Math both groups will begin working on Unit 5. Here both groups will be learning different methods for working on the area multiplication, learning on how to solve with 2-3 digit problems. Now it is crucial that your student become very familiar and fast with his/her multiplication facts. He/She should be reviewing facts in the car, on the computer and on weekends. This is most important since we are approaching ERB testing in the spring , and the children will need to have their facts memorized to solve all types of problems.

Spelling, punctuation, and grammar continue to be the focus in our Language Arts’ curriculum. We continue working in creative writing, our English. book, and our Daily Oral Language.

The pace of 4th grade is going to pick up and the student’s responsibility for his/her work and tests are going to be put on his/her shoulders. As a parent, we ask you to keep your student’s spirits up, keep their self-confidence growing, and give support where you see the need. Please try to let go, so that each child can grow into the responsible student they need to be for fifth grade and the upper grades in Middle School. From now until spring break, we will be working very diligently to accomplish the majority of our goals. Once spring arrives the children will want to be outside, and they will see summer around the corner. Thanks for your support.

Colonial Craftsman Research Project Begins

Our Colonial Craftsman project begins in January. It will take some time for completion. Each student will be given a Colonial Craftsman book from the library to read at home. This is in place of a novel for our monthly book reports. There will be instructions accompanying the book informing the students of the due dates for the different parts of the project. For those students who need additional support in reading, we ask that parents help with vocabulary words and material. Once the book is read, we will move into the research stage of the project. As your child reads the book, it would be helpful if he/ she takes simples notes. Each student will be given a list of questions to help him/her gather information. However, we ask that if the information cannot be found in the book, that they make use of the internet, library books, and encyclopedias to add informative facts to the report.

Parent Conferences

On January 28 & 29 there will be noon dismissals for parent conferences. These conferences are not mandatory for all parents. They are designed for teachers to update parents on issues discussed earlier in the year or address new ones that have come up since the last conference/report card. Mrs. Dyke and Mrs. Pause will contact those families with whom we feel it is necessary to schedule a conference. The day is very limited for conference times, but if you feel it is necessary to come in and meet with us, please call Karol to be put on the list. Report cards will be distributed again in March.

Computer skills should be a focus throughout each month. Each student should be keyboarding with both hands on the keyboard. Also, working in First in Math web site, is also a necessity. Please get those keyboarding calendars into Mrs. Kupferberg by the 26th of the month. Try sheppardsoftware.com for practice with states, capitals and more.

Music

First of all, every Lower School student did an excellent job in this year's Holiday Show, both in their performances and in the rehearsals leading up to the night of the Show.  Congratulations to all!

They will ring in the New Year with bells, and then the students will play recorders in music class.  They are learning peace songs to sing during Barnesville School's Peace Week.  Also, they are working on rounds, canons, and seasonal songs.

For the first week of January, the Composer Of The Week has been George Bizet.  Next, the students will learn about Clara Schumann.

Art

This group of fourth graders works at very differnet paces in art. I have some students finishing their Limner portraits and some starting our embroidery unit. We are also putting our bases on our weathervanes which will be trickling home as your student finishes their portrait and moves on to embroidery. All the students are happily working away on their endeavors!
