Upcoming Events

We hope to see everyone at our annual May Day on May 6th. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to show the songs and dances they have been learning in music. It is always a great time!

Arts and Academics Night is also coming up soon. We hope that you will be able to make the time to come out for this wonderful event. We will be giving a performance under the guidance of our Spanish teachers and will have some terrific work out in our classroom to show you. This is an excellent time for the students to show off their hard work from the entire year!

We will also be presenting an Author’s Tea which is explained in detail in the next article. We hope that all parents will be able to join us for this exciting time!

Academics in May and June

In Language Arts, we are finishing our "Family Time" unit beginning our "Talent Show" unit. We will read four new stories and will complete our last writing piece—our “how-to” instructions. We will soon be preparing for our Author’s Tea. This will be held on June 6th at 9:00 AM and all parents are invited to attend.  Look in your child’s homework folder for your invitation.

In Math, both classes will be completing a unit on fractions (Chapter 8) and we will finish the year learning about different forms of measurement including linear, weight, and capacity measurements.

In Science, we are completing our Life Science unit and are learning about the life cycles of plants and animals.

In Social Studies this month, we will continue our study of Japan, including our exciting trip to Miyako.

We are now learning the uppercase cursive letters and will practice writing cursive while completing a few class assignments.

Spring Has Sprung!
We have really enjoyed learning all about environmental science this year. We learned about and explored Barnesville's environment and determined what makes Barnesville a great place to grow plants and flowers. We got our hands dirty when we dug in the soil and crafted biodegradable paper pots, and we also talked about monster plants such as the Venus Fly trap.

In May and June, we will celebrate and enjoy all that nature shares with us in the spring. We will beautify our campus on May 18th as a part of an Earth Day celebration. Furthermore, we will appreciate nature as our background when trying out the new low ropes course constructed by Barnesville alumni. We'll also look more closely at the life cycles of plants and animals and how environmental factors affect these cycles. Finally, we'll try our hands at growing some clean air neck pets (think Chia pets!) while always keeping respect for nature in our hearts and minds.

Spanish
During the month of May we will begin our final unit of this school year called “Food”. In this unit we will learn about the different mealtimes and explore the food pyramid. Also, we will compare meals between The United States and Spanish countries. Students will continue practicing songs and dances for our Spanish Night.
Physical Education
Second grade has been working as a team in numerous activities this year and will continue to do so in the last months of the school year! As we finish hockey, we will be moving forward into a hand lacrosse unit.  In this unit, the second graders will be exposed to the mechanics and basic movements of lacrosse.  As the weather breaks, we will also be using the outdoors to learn different activities and games.  Make sure that on PE days, your child is wearing appropriate shoes!
Art
We've been having a lot of fun in art this year, but have progressed a little slower than usual on the curriculum. This May is our month to learn about Japan!  We will learn how to do a drawing of a Japanese garden and try our hands at Sumi-e ink painting and make windsocks. Your children are a lovely, cohesive group to work with and I have thoroughly enjoyed their company and good spirits this year!
Music
In Music Class, the Second Grade students have been listening to the sounds of sixtets and septets.  The sixtet presented to them the unusual, "ear-stretching" sounds of avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Kreuzspiel" (meaning "Crossplay," a method of composing atonal music).  They plan to welcome Spring with May Day festivities, including celebratory singing and dancing, on May 6 beginning at 10:30 AM.  You are all invited!
