Pre-K in February

Dear Families,

January was a cold and snowy month which kept us in the classroom a lot. But this gave us a wonderful opportunity to work on our social skills – playing and negotiating with each other. A helpful and gentle reminder about taking turns with one item that two or more friends wanted at the same time, helped strengthen these skills. We continue to have lots of fun celebrating the season of winter with songs, games, and crafts.

February is packed with many celebrations and lots of exciting learning opportunities. We will learn about Groundhog’s Day at the beginning of the month. We will discuss Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln as well as celebrate our 100th Day of School which looks to be on Tuesday, February 22nd (barring any snow days). The letter this month will be P, B, and R. We have lots of activities planned for those letters including making pigs.

Valentine’s Day is also coming up. In the classroom, we will make Valentines bags which will act as your child’s mailbox. Please write one for each child in the class and be sure to write that child’s name on the front. Each child, on the morning of February 14th, will deliver their Valentines by matching the name on the envelope to the name on the bag. This is an excellent way to practice name recognition of our friends! We will be having a small celebration in the classroom later the same day.

I am very excited to be continuing our Star of The Week program. Thanks to Zackary and his family for starting us off on the right foot! In February we will learn more about Allie and Nicholas!

We will also be talking about community helpers and why they are so important to our communities. One very important community helper is the mail carrier and the post office where they work. We will be going to the Boyds Post Office on Tuesday, February 8th to take a tour and do a special mailing. We will leave school about 10:50am and return to school by 11:30am. You will be getting a permission slip shortly.

Finally, on February 10th, the EC and Pre-K will have a Parent’s Visiting Day. From 8am until 11:30am you will be welcome to join us in the classroom to see how the day goes and to experience some fun activities. As this date gets closer, I will have more information as will the school.

Enjoy the month of February!

Warmly,

Chris and Debbie

Music
In Music Class, the students are singing songs about Winter, and they also continue to build their repertoire of traditional and fun folk songs which have originated in our great big, diversified country of America.  They are learning how to read "picture symbol charts" in which little images stand for music notes of a song, indicating relative pitches and basic rhythms.  This is a step towards learning to read music. They continue to have fun with creative movement, and acting out songs as they sing.
Spanish

The school year is moving by very quickly. I am excited at the progress that I have seen from our younger grades. We will also begin new topics in class on February. During this month we will learn about body parts and dental health. We will learn a song called “knees and shoulders, knees and toes” in Spanish.
