Parent Encouragement Program at Barnesville

We are very excited to offer, for the first time, an extended parenting class at The Barnesville School! For parents of children ages 5 -12, interested in raising responsible, caring kids...learn practical skills and gain insights into how to use positive, encouraging methods with your children to gain cooperation, foster respect and responsibility, set and uphold limits and bring out the best in each child. The class is being offered by the Parent Encouragement Program (PEP). PEP, a local non-profit, has been offering parenting classes in the Washington area for over 30 years.

The class is being taught by a long-time Parent Educator with PEP, Pascale Brady, who recently spoke at Barnesville on the subject of raising responsible children.

PEP is offering a 20% discount for registrations received by March 26th. Please register directly with PEP at 301.929.8824. The class at Barnesville will be a weekday morning class, for 8 weeks, beginning in mid-April. In addition to the morning class at Barnesville, The Butler School in Darnestown, MD, has opened up their 8-week evening class to our community.  Please see the attached flyer for all the details!

A Note from Mrs. Nave

Basket Found

A large round basket with handle was left in the lobby after a bake sale in February. It was filled with very nicely wrapped treats for the bake sale and is now empty in my office. Please stop by and claim your basket.

Visitor Passes

Have you seen any visitor passes for the school’s security system? If you have, please return them to my office. I am missing a few.

Tooth box report- just for fun!

It has been a busy two weeks for Mrs. Nave- the puller of teeth. Seven tooth boxes left my office with teeth. I pulled a tooth for a third grader and a first grader. One of them begged me to pull it and the other said her mom wouldn’t do it. These teeth were ready to go to the tooth fairy. One 5th grader pulled her own tooth in class!  Three other students lost  teeth and one third grader lost a chip of her tooth.

Happy Spring Break!

From Our Head of School

Today is a day that I think about beginnings and endings. As I write, I’m ending a busy day at Barnesville, but by the time you read this, you’ll be beginning your Spring Break.

First, endings. Recently we surveyed our young alumni (and their parents) to ask them how they were doing in their secondary schools, and I will share the results of this survey soon. One thing that stands out in the feedback is that our students (and their parents) feel very well prepared with regards to academics, independence, and organization. Phrases like way ahead of school peers and the books that I have to read this year, I read in 7th & 8th grade stand out as examples of how our graduates and their parents feel about their transition from Barnesville. And as we see our current 8th graders gain acceptance in their schools of choice, it further confirms the value of a Barnesville education as the right preparation for high school and beyond.

And now, beginnings. On Wednesday we held our New Parent Welcome Reception, and Janine brought our three-year-old son Jack to visit for a little while. I walked him up to the Early Childhood classroom, where he joined in the morning activities. Mrs. Barr read some stories and sang songs about spring, and then Mrs. Jordan led a lesson on using our senses. As I sat on the side of the room watching these teachers do their magic, I thought about the journey ahead for Jack and others joining Barnesville next year. Jack will be a proud member of the Barnesville Class of 2021. Having seen how the journey ends in 8th grade, I am excited about all the wonderful experiences Jack will have in the eleven years to come.

Have a peaceful and joyful Spring Break! See you in April!

Middle School Breakfast

Just a reminder that tomorrow, we will host a special Middle School Breakfast in the gymnasium.  More details for students will follow tomorrow morning during Morning Meeting.

Admissions and Advancement

The admissions season continues to be busy as ever! Wednesday, March 24, we hosted our newly accepted families for a breakfast social followed by class visits. They enjoyed meeting one another as well as visiting with parent volunteers, faculty and administrators. Of course, the highlight of their morning was seeing our educators and students in action! Thank you to everyone who helped make this a successful event!

Preschool Playdate and Open House – April 27, 9:30AM – 10:40AM

Children ages 2 years through 4 years are invited to attend this fun event at Barnesville! It will begin with story time in the Library followed by visits to Early Childhood (EC) through Kindergarten classrooms. The event will culminate with playtime in the gym! While children are playing, parents can attend an information session previewing our EC through Kindergarten academic program. The Preschool Playdate and Open House is open to current Barnesville families as well as those not currently attending the school. So, “Be a Friend and Bring a Friend” and we’ll see you at the Preschool Playdate and Open House! Click here to RSVP!

We need volunteers!
Please email jankhyland@aol.com if you are available for any of the following:

  • Week of May 3 in school – auction prep
  • Friday, May 7 – set up at school and transporting items to Strong Mansion
  • Saturday, May 8 – volunteers who work at the event do not need to purchase tickets. We will train you to help with check-in and check-out and other behind-the-scenes activities.

Baskets

We're developing a selection of items at the silent auction and we're looking for some nice, empty baskets. If anyone has any that they don't want anymore and are willing to donate to the cause, drop them off with Nicole in the Communications Office.

Want to "Campaign" for Barnesville?

We've all seen candidate signs in front yards as we drive by area homes. Would you be interested in promoting Barnesville the same way? Let the Communications Office know if you'd be interested in having a "Barnesville School" yard sign in your front yard. Tell those passing by your home that you're a Barnesville supporter!
