| | From Our Head of School | | From time to time the teachers and I will talk about a given topic in our faculty meetings, and I’ll be asked to develop a policy for parents to help explain how we do things here at Barnesville. Most recently, the topic of buddy gift giving came up, but rather than draft an Official Statement of Buddy Gift Giving, I thought I’d share an observation from Morning Meeting. A few weeks ago, I was talking with some students as we waited for the rest of the student body to arrive. One of the girls I was talking to was very happy, and she couldn’t wait to show me something. She reached into her bag and pulled out a decorative pencil eraser, the sort that looks like a cartoon animal head. She had just received it from her buddy, and she couldn’t be more pleased with the gift. Her buddy knew how much she liked them, and had remembered to get her one. Sometimes we get caught up in our desire to be kind and do well, and this can translate to some truly extravagant gift purchasing. I recall the day one of my sons came home with a very generous gift from his Lower School buddy. I would remind everyone, though, that the small, thoughtful gift can have as much impact as the larger one (or maybe even more). While I don’t think it’s my place to dictate what constitutes the right size or frequency of gifts, I encourage everyone to remember that small tokens can mean a great deal. So what do we do at Barnesville? Buddies at Barnesville typically give each other gifts, usually a few times a year, most often around the start of Winter Break. Some buddies give gifts on other occasions, such as birthdays and at the end of the school year, and others do not. And while some students have multiple buddies, given the range of grade size, others share one buddy. Clearly, there is no “one size fits all” approach here! Of course, gifts should be given out of kindness, not a sense of obligation. Regardless of how you practice, I encourage you to consider the simple gifts for your buddies. John Huber

| Middle School | | It has been a joy these past couple of weeks to witness the energy and activity of the middle school students. The sports teams have been busy and as I write this note to you our boys are preparing to play in the MJAC Soccer Championship game against The Banner School. As I have watched their last two games I have seen such teamwork and unselfish play which demonstrates a great deal of character on their part. Our fifth graders have been busy revitalizing our recycling program as they go door-to-door throughout the school collecting and emptying all recycle bins. Our seventh and eighth grade students were busy today helping to haul many, many items into the gym for our annual Barnesville Basement sale this Saturday and it was delightful to see the service learning taking place as they helped others and served the school. We value service learning at Barnesville and work to provide many opportunities throughout the school year for our students to participate in those types of activities. Please remember that next Friday we will hold our annual Help the Homeless Walkathon in the morning, as well as celebrate Halloween. We will be hosting speakers from The Dwelling Place and The Frederick Rescue Mission who will talk with our middle school students about what it means to be homeless. Our students will have the opportunity to ask questions and dialogue with the representatives before they begin the walkathon. After lunch the kids will change into their costumes as we prepare for our annual Halloween fashion show in the gym. I look forward to seeing the many creative costumes I am sure our middle school students will be wearing. Have a wonderful weekend and I hope to see many of you at the Barnesville Basement. ~Vickie Roos, Assistant Head of School | |
| 8th Grade Holiday Fundraiser | | Each year the Eighth grade raises money towards the final trip of their Barnesville Experience. The trip to New York City is both a learning experience, and a final trip with their school family of many years. This year to help fund their trip, the 8th grade is selling cornucopias with live flowers, wreaths, and holiday centerpieces in either red, blue, or fall colors. These lovely floral arrangements will be perfect either as gifts or for your own home celebrations. All arrangements will be delivered to school on either 11/22-23 for fall and Thanksgiving pieces, or 11/30-12/1 for the wreaths and holiday centerpieces. Order details can be found the page attached here. Please support the eighth grade - Thank You! | |
| Lower School | | As a parent of two older daughters’ I can remember asking myself, “Are we just too busy?” I went through a period when they were younger where I felt I was racing from one activity to the next whether it was a club sport, a music lesson or other extra-curricular activity. I had to really take a step back and assess whether my children were on “overload.” How can you tell if your child is too busy? Boys Town Pediatrics helps parents look for signs of being over-loaded, such as: • Feeling tired, exhausted or depressed • Not enjoying the activity they once loved • Lower grades in school • Complaining of headaches or body aches, which may be due to stress or lack of sleep • Having stomach pain, which may be due to missed meals or stress An active schedule can wear on a child’s social and family life. When a child is too busy to play with friends, their friendships may suffer—as does the family structure if one parent is busy running one child to baseball practice while the other parent is at a dance recital. Not to mention, it can be extremely tiresome for everyone involved. If you feel your child is too busy, you may want to think about a few things: • Schedule activities in moderation. Start slow and add an additional activity when you feel your child is ready to multi-task. • Make sure the activity is developmentally appropriate for the age of your child. • Keep a family calendar to stay organized. Place the calendar in a place where everyone can see it and can add their activities. • Mark off a day on the calendar as a family day. Do not schedule any individual activities on that day and do something together as a family. • Parents may need to say “No”. If adding one more activity is going to overload your child, you can talk to them about dropping an activity to add the new one. Take a moment and carefully examine your child’s schedule. If you feel there are too many activities scheduled, talk with your child and together decide where you can cut back. Keeping a structured active schedule can play a role in the health and well-being of your child. ~Vickie Roos, Assistant Head of School | |

| Business Office | | How Do I Pay My Fees? There are several easy ways to pay your Barnesville School fees. 1. Using the internet: This is the most convenient way to pay your tuition fees using the school’s secure payment site: www.factsmgt.com Full payments come directly to the school. Budgeted monthly payments through FACTS can be made via Automatic Bank Payment (ACH) or Credit Card. You may also pay you other related fees on www.RenWeb.com. You will need to register your email address to make payments and access site's available features. 2. Check: All checks must be payable to "The Barnesville School" for the full amount. Please make sure to always include your family ID number and child's name in the memo. 3. Cash: For your safety and security we do not advise you to pay with cash. Please do not send cash by postal mail, nor give money to someone else to pay for you. If it is your only option, it is important that you keep your receipt as proof of payment. ~Lise Robinson, Business Manager | |
| Technology | | OFFICE ANYONE? In order for the documents created by Barnesville School students to keep pace with the rest of the computing world all computers on campus were upgraded to use Microsoft Office 2010 this year. Microsoft's latest version of Office has a significantly different look and feel from previous versions, especially Office 2003, but has some helpful features. The main menu items are now grouped according to seven basic functions, each with it's requisite sub groups, with all sub items displayed at the top of the document. At first the new format feels a little overwhelming, but after using 2010 for a couple of days I found the persistent availability of the sub items to significantly speed document editing. As with any new piece of software there is always a learning curve, which all students and staff are now experiencing together, but in this case I think there is a pot of gold (albeit small) at the end of the rainbow. ~Jim Snider, Technology Director | |
