| Social Studies | | Eighth graders will complete their study of America's rise to world power and its eventual participation in World War I prior to exams on November 17-21. They have enjoyed our study of the Brooklyn Bridge, Andrew Carnegie, John Muir, and Teddy Roosevelt (just to name a few of the characters we have researched). Can America "return to normalcy" after the war? We will tackle this question and many others prior to the Holidays! | |
| Language Arts | | Students have begun reading John Steinbeck's, Of Mice and Men. As they conduct a literary analysis of the novel, there will be a particular focus on the casting of Curley's wife and her portrayal as the lone female on the all-male ranch. Writing, grammar and vocabulary instruction are on-going!

| BYOD Program - Software Update | | The eighth grade BYOD pilot program is off to a good start. I routinely see students using their laptops and iPads in classrooms for writing, research, note taking, etc. As part of our effort to ensure that all students have full functionality of their devices while at school, please make sure each device has the following software and/or apps.
Windows
Office 2010 (including OneNote)
Google Cloud Connect - this is a free plug-in for Microsoft Office

| Spanish | | Eighth grade still has “ESPAÑA” as their main country of study. Students will learn this month about body parts, personal hygiene, symptoms and illnesses vocabulary. For Grammar, students will learn the verbs: to see, to listen, to smell, to say and “doler,” which means to hurt. Eighth grade started to read the book, Las aventuras de Miguelito. | |

| | Art | | The eighth graders had fun working on the computer to create graffiti images of their name as part of their study of the book, The Outsiders. They also thoroughly enjoyed creating E-Z cut prints because they got to use sharp tools to cut in to rubber to make print reminiscent of woodcutting and linoleum cutting techniques. They are now embarking on a challenging assignment of taking an art image and changing it in 11 different ways. First they will try to do a shaded rendition of their image and then an exact color copy of their image. This will keep them busy for most of November. | |
| Music | | The rehearsals for the upcoming Holiday Show – Tuesday – December 13, 2011 at 7:30 pm have picked up speed and intensity. Singing, dancing and playing instruments are in full swing. Please note that ALL Middle School students should wearing black dress pants and dress shoes for the Holiday Show. Individual classes have voted as to the color of their shirt.
Guitar strumming, picking and tapping are in full force with current musical artists. Their cache of guitar chords is growing as is their confidence.
Piano instruction continues to provide the basis of musical comprehension and proficiency. | |
| Physical Education | | The students continue to learn more about exercise and wellness this month (and beyond…). This includes learning more about the major muscle groups and fitness principles. They will have fitness workouts each class that will address the major muscle groups, stretches for the major muscle groups, and record their progress. We have focused on proper strength exercises and flexibility exercises. Additionally, they will start learning about exercising heart rate, developing their own fitness programs, healthy lifestyle habits, and learning how to overcome obstacles. We will also start field hockey. Students will learn agility, balance, dribbling, and game strategies. Their grades are comprised of the following: daily personal performance, skill development and implementation, and personal accountability. | |
