Ellen Landrieau, Kindergarten Teacher
Hello Families,

November is a busy month both in Kindergarten and at Barnesville School. In Kindergarten we continue to work to develop our skills as team players. We are working hard to be good listeners and good friends.  We are developing our strength as a "school family" and working to care for and about each other. This month the theme in reading is Families. We will learn a lot about our families. Grandparents Day will be enjoyed this month and we all look forward to sharing our classroom and our school day with our Grandparents or Grand friends. We will also learn about Thanksgiving, Pilgrims, Native Americans and traditions that our families follow at this time of year.

Thanks to all of the parents who attended our wet but exciting visit to Homestead Farm.  It was truly a field trip to remember! Another big thank you to our room parents, Paula Russin and Beth Toth for organizing our Halloween party and also to all the parents who contributed something to it. The party was lots of fun. We enjoyed making paper, playing decorate the pumpkin and hearing a wonderful story. The goody bags, fruit kabobs and candy apples were a huge hit!

Have a joyous Thanksgiving with your families. Cherish every moment of being with your child and developing the traditions that will stay with them for a lifetime!
Language Arts
This month the theme is Families. We will listen to many stories about different kinds of families and the things they do together. We will continue to work to listen for beginning and ending sounds. We will add blending onsets and rimes as well as learning to segment them. We will add the words my and like to our list of high frequency words which already includes I, a, and see. We will compare and contrast different versions of stories and listen to be able to answer comprehension questions. We will continue to develop our fine motor skills with writing and cutting. The letters this month are Tt, Bb and Nn.
Science and Social Studies
This month we will learn about families and creating family trees. We will also learn about Thanksgiving, pilgrims and Native Americans and their role in the Thanksgiving holiday.

In science we are going out into nature to discover her bounty and collecting items we see on our walk. We will use our keen sense of sight to look more closely at the items we collected, draw our favorite and write about it as well as working together in teams to sort, classify and identify different items but especially leaves. We will make leaves using coffee filters and do a fun experiment with leaves and coffee filters. We will learn why and how leaves change colors. We will do lots of leafy things!

There are no Kindergarten birthdays to celebrate in November!

Mathematics
This month we are learning to compare numbers and sets using the symbol = and discussing more than and less than. We will create sets using manipulatives to demonstrate understanding of each concept. We will also explore the numerals 0 through 5 creating sets for each number as well as learning the proper way to form the numbers as we write. The students will also be introduced to ordinal numbers and practice using them as we line up.
Music
The Kindergarten students have been learning songs about Autumn, and about little wild animals and birds that live around us, and about amusing, lovable characters such as "Lazy John" and "Old Lady Mac." They have seen a movie portraying a musical version of Alice In Wonderland as well. And they continue to learn about Medieval music by hearing the sounds of monks chanting, dance music from the period with irresistible and delightful percussion rhythms, and people singing "Sumer Is Icumen In!"
Physical Education
David Martin, PE Teacher
The students are being introduced to lifetime fitness activities and exercises. We will discuss healthy eating and lifestyle habits too. This includes cardiovascular fitness, strength training and disease prevention. We will begin a soccer unit which will focus on skill development, dribbling, body coordination, teamwork, and offensive and defensive strategies. Their grades are comprised of the following: gross motor skills and daily personal performance (skill, listening and following directions, and sportsmanship).
Spanish
Senora Campos, Spanish Teacher
Kindergarten students are ready to learn “Los colores” in Spanish during this month. We are going to read the book
Conejito aprende los colores, (Bunny learns the colors) this is a beautiful story about a bunny who mixes colors to discover new ones. We are going to practice the name of the colors during the class and play games regarding colors. Also, we are going to talk about “El Dia de Gracias” (Thanksgiving).
Kindergarten Art
In Kindergarten Art we had fun with line and shape in September and completed two artworks in the style of painting construction artist, Frank Stella. Some of your children's creations have come home as well as paintings of water lillies in the style of Claude Monet. Paintings of haystacks and other Stella creations are being saved for our art exhibit in April. For the month of November we will learn about the Art of Renoir (animal chalk drawings), Thiebauld (bakery items), Burchfield (forest scenes), Nevelson (wood sculpture) and Hofmann (shape abstract painting). I'm looking forward to all the fun we're going to have learning about these artists!
