| Kindergarten’s Great Pumpkin Experiment | | Several years ago, a farmer told me that if I had three pumpkins of the same variety but in varying sizes, they would all have the same number of seeds. This posed a challenge to me to prove this theory. When we studied the life cycle of a pumpkin, I spoke with the children about this theory and we decided to test it. I purchased three pumpkins; one small, one medium and one large. On November 1, 2010 three very brave moms came to Kindergarten, armed with cutting tools and loads of patience to help us out. Mrs. Goldberg worked with the children on the medium pumpkin; Mrs. Krishnan on the small pumpkin; and Mrs. Smith on the large pumpkin. The children measured circumference, weighed the pumpkins and counted their ribs. Each piece of data was recorded on a chart. The pumpkins were then cut open and scooped out. All of the seeds were separated from the innards. Seeds were rinsed and then counted. The children put seeds in piles of ten and then counted by tens to 100's. Below are the amazing results: - small pumpkin- 22 inches, 18 ribs, 4 pounds and 450 seeds
- medium pumpkin- 26 inches, 27 ribs, 10.8 pounds and 477 seeds
- large pumpkin-36 inches, 20 ribs, 21.6 pounds and 460 seeds.
The seed count was so close that we agreed that the farmer was correct. We also discovered that the pumpkin with the most ribs had the most seeds! ~Mrs. Landriau | |
