Lower School Holiday Show
121108 162.jpg
We are looking forward to holding our annual Lower School Holiday Show on Dec. 16, at 7:30 pm. This is an oportunity for all Lower School students to perform in a traditional, formal concert setting. Therefore, Mrs. Taylor kindly asks that parents and friends in the audience observe the following requests:
  • There is to be no seating on the floor directly in front of the stage. (That's the "conductor's space"!) Siblings and other related children should sit in the chairs with their families.
  • If you feel you must video-tape, please be discreet about it. Please don't put the cameras right in front of the children, or "in their faces-" it tends to encourage inappropriate behaviors.

The children should arrive at school the evening of the performance between 7:00 and 7:10 pm. They should report immediately to their classrooms to be with their teachers. Festive clothing is appropriate-the attire needn't be overly dressy, though. The children should be comfortable, and look nice and neat-no T-shirts or jeans!

Parents, when you bring your children to their classrooms between 7:00 and 7:10 pm, please take their coats with you to the gym. All Lower School children will be dismissed after the show from the gym!

We look forward to seeing you!!

Fourth Grade Befriends Air Force Captain
Fourth Graders are writing letters to send to Captain Buddy Cheek, who is serving in the Air Force presently on a mission  in Turkmenistan. He recently sent our class and our Kindergarten buddies a detailed letter about himself and his buddy soldiers.  He thanked us for our notes that were shipped overseas in care packages, just before Thanksgiving.  He also sent us a miniature Turkmenistan flag for our classes.  His home base is in Tyndall AFB in Panama City, Florida.  Captain's Cheek's end line in his letter stated, "I am humbled and grateful that you are keeping my unit in your thoughts."  As maturing 4th grade "Patriots" of The Barnesville School, we are also very happy to be able to send  good wishes to him.  We want to let him and his unit know that they are thought about and sent wishes that they will all be safe and come home soon.

***Save The Date***

On January 27th, 2011, Barnesville will welcome, as part of our Klingenstein Lecture Series, Howard Norman, author of The Northern Lights, which the Washington Post described as "an original, entertaining account of a boy's coming of age . . . vivid and memorable."  Mr. Norman will meet with our students during the morning, and we'll invite parents and community members to join us at 7pm that evening for a book reading and signing.  More information will follow.

What is it? The Black-Eyed Susan Award is a best book award selected by students from the state of Maryland.

Who nominates the books? A nominating committee of the Maryland Association of School Librarians prepares a list of nominated books that the students read and vote on for the book they like best.

What kinds of books are nominated? The four groupings of nominated books are: Picture Books, Grades 4 -6, Grades 6-9, and High School.

How does it work at Barnesville? The program will run at Barnesville from January 19th –April 19th. You can learn more about the nominating process at the MEMO website

Grades PK-3---Picture Books

Students must read or have read to them eight of the sixteen books.
  • Black-Eyed Susan book bag filled with all the nominated titles travels to each grade level for about a two-week time slot. Grade level teachers will coordinate sharing during the two weeks.
  • Sign up for time slots will begin on Jan. 19th at LS Faculty Meeting.
  • At the end of the two-week period the students will come to the library to vote and return the book bag.
  • Students will receive a small token for their participation.

Grades 4-8---Reading in the Grades 4-6 grouping and the Grades 6-9 grouping

  • They must read three books, write short reviews and responses for each book, and place a sticker after the title they have read and reviewed.
  • Books and record keeping binders are on the top shelf above YA and Fiction sections.
  • Students in 7th and 8th grade should read from the Grade 6-9 grouping.
  • Students need to read three in a grade level group to vote in that group. They may read in more than one grouping and they may read more than three titles.
  • They can only check one Black-Eyed Susan title out at a time.
  • Students receive a small reward based on levels of participation.

Discussion Groups for Fiction Titles:

I am looking for staff and faculty members to read one of the fiction titles and host a discussion group at lunch twice during the course of the contest. It builds enthusiasm if we host on the same week. I suggest that we meet to discuss the books during the weeks of February 13th-16th and March 13th-17th. Stop by on Friday afternoon, January 20th for teacher copies that I will get from the public library. I hope you will participate.

Thanks,

Cindy Barr, Librarian
