Friday, December 3rd at 2:15!  This will be when the class will be presenting several scenes from Macbeth.  You are invited!

We really will be moving pretty quickly into our social studies unit on post-Renaissance Europe, including an up close and personal exploration of Russia's colorful history.

Science

The 7th graders all did a great job on their science fair projects.  The judges were impressed with your projects.  Congratulations to our  winners

third place -- Jenny Strong

second place -- Robert Wilbur

first place -- Benjamin Meit

Now that we know how cells work, we will turn our attention to how they interact with their environment.  What are respiration, photosynthesis, and fermentation?  How does the cell get what it needs to live?  How log does a cell live?  How do they reproduce?  We will answer these and many other questions during the month of December.

Language Arts

Students have been working hard on a disability project.  Each student was assigned a notable living with a disability.  Students created a six panel brochure summarizing their individual as well as wrote a five paragraph biographical essay.  Disability projects will be presented to parents and students orally!

Algebra

Students are nearing the completion of Chapter Three which focused on solving equations.  Chapter Four  will cover Solving Inequalties.  Students will learn how to solve inequalities using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  Solving mult-stiep and compound inequalities will be tackled as well.  Absolute Value Equations will round out the chapter.

Honors Algebra

Why do we need to learn this? When will I ever use this? These are common questions heard during many math classes. The purpose of this course is to answer those questions. During the month of October we will be looking at graphs. We will begin with a review of the coordinate plane and how to graph a line. We will discuss the slope of a line and what it means. Analyzing graphs to identify the relationship between the variables is an important skill that we will practice this month.

Belief Systems/Ethics

In our Belief Systems/Ethics class for September and October we are spending a lot of time learning vocabulary definitions and talking about how the words interrelate to each other by using some writing prompts, discussion,  poems and vignettes by famous people such as Emily Dickinson and Plato. In conjunction with the art class we are learning about the definition of symbol, alter ego and archetype through art works illustrating these concepts. The words we have been discussing and relating to each other are values, morality, ethics, conscience, believer, faith, agnostic, atheist, religion, philosophy, psychology, id, ego super ego, consciousness, unconscious, alter ego, archetypes, and collective unconscious. Although this list may sound a bit daunting, your children are relishing discussing their interrelationships through guided readings and opinion prompter activities. Knowledge of these words help them to have a greater awareness for their discussion of Great Religions and ethics which will occur in this class and is the theme of seventh grade art. The children will be quizzed on their knowledge of the definitions for all these words. They very successfully completed a matching quiz for the first set of words given to them. Considering that this class only meets once a week for 45 minutes, because of your childrens' conscientious behavior we have made a lot of headway into understanding these words and giving opinions concerning them.

Physical Education

The seventh graders have been busy working on their heart rate project this month. They spent two weeks working in small groups, going through different activities and situations, and analyzing their heart rate. They were able to see how each activity changed their heart rate and were able to draw conclusions for these findings. They are currently developing and practicing their volleyball skills. They are going to continue with Net Games, as they progress to badminton.

Music

October has been a busy month for music students. The introduction of the guitar has yielded great results. The students have learned a simplified version of the C, G7 and G chord, as well as a full D7 chord. Piano instructions continue to support the theory needed to play the guitar as well as other musical applications. We are in full swing for the Holiday Show. Feet are stomping and voices are ringing. Be sure to mark your calendar for December 14, 2010 at 7:30pm for the Holiday Show

Spanish

Seventh graders have been learning about Spanish speaking countries and their capitals. They have also been learning about body parts, health and how one is feeling.

Seven graders are also learning the dance for October 15, celebrating "Hispanic Heritage Month".

Art

Seventh graders began the year in both Art and Ethics class learning about symbols. In art they researched religious symbols of the world, alphabets and other universal symbols. They created black and white assymmetrical designs with some of their symbol choices. In ethics we discussed the part of the brain geared towards morality. We talked about the supremacy of evolution of cultures that believed in supernatural beings. we discussed which was more important to ancient societies aggression or cooperation and we learned about early 20th century psychologist, jung's theories of the collective inconscious and archetypes anf freud's theory of ego, id and super ego. In art the students are going to look at alter ego paintings of Picasso which are the jester/trickster and the bull. Students will create their own alter ego oil paintings about themselves.
