Social Studies

The 8th graders will be focused on many topics related to the Second World War as they lead up to their 2nd trimester exam in early March.  They will be reading many primary documents (such as the Order by Roosevelt which interned the Japanese-Americans in 1942 and the subsequent letter of apology by President Clinton). They have also begun to tackle the many maps of Europe and the Pacific theatre; locating the many countries of the past and figuring out which countries exist today has proven to be a fun challenge for the class.

After studying World War 2, we will move into the Cold War and decide whether or not we "like Ike."

Science

We are concluding our discussion of the elements and the periodic table this month.  What are the properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids?  What characteristics do the elements in each group share?  What is a noble gas and why are they so stable?  What are these elements used for anyway?  What happens when certain elements combine?  These are the questions we will be investigating in the next few weeks.  After that, we move on to acids and bases.

Honors Algebra

Factoring, factoring, factoring!  That is all we seem to be doing in Honors Algebra right now.  We have learned many strategies to help us to factor equations to make them easier to solve.  Right now we are learning how to solve quadratic equations by factoring and using the zero factor theorem.  Once we master that, we will find out exactly how useful quadratic equations are.  This is a time when math and science come crashing into each other.  it may sound scary, but it really is not.  Algebra in the real world... who knew?

Geometry
Our study of geometry has been focusing on triangles and their properties recently.  We have discerned how to prove triangles are congruent (equal in size and shape) and what other observations and conclusions those proofs can lead to.  We have looked at exterior angles of triangles and how they relate to the angles within the triangles.  We have recognized that a larger angle faces a larger side of the triangle and that the lengths of the sides of a triangle follow specific rules and limitations.  When we complete this unit on triangles, we will begin our investigation of quadrilaterals and circles.
Algebra

Students will cover Chapter 7 in their text.  Solving systems by graphing, solving systems using substitution and elimination are the first topics.  Applications of linear systems will follow.  Ending the chapter of study will be linear inequalities and systems of linear inequalities.

Language Arts
The third trimester begins with the "Peeps" project.  Students are challenged to make a diorama of a famous occurrence or scene.  It can be historic, current or future event, or it can be a nod to pop culture.  The one rule is that all the characters in the diorama must be played by Peeps (bunnies and/or chicks).  Students submit a proposal in writing for their design and give an oral presentation of their final projects.

Art

Eight graders will finally start on their complex grid design project where they will take an image by a famous artist and change it 11 different ways. They will first use shading to draw it representationally and then they will try to reproduce it in color. They will next change the image according to four aspects of design; stylization, geometric, decorative and abstraction.

Physical Education

This month was filled with physical activity! The eighth graders have been scoring, defending, and passing their way around the gym playing floor hockey. They are currently working up a sweat playing handball. Additionally this month, they have been working to improve their Presidential Fitness scores.

Spanish
This month students will continue learning about an every day activity. They will be writing autobiographies, describe their every day routines and re enforce their Spanish paragraph writing.
Students will learn about clothing, their cost and their style.
Music

We will march into March with feet stomping, drums banging and cymbals crashing.  In addition to movement, we will explore and experience the music of several classical composers.  This will include Bach, Beethoven and Vivaldi.  Piano and guitar instruction continues on Thursdays.  Students are invited to bring their own guitar in to play if they so choose.
