| Shirley J. Lowrie “Thank You For Teaching” Award | | We are calling upon all of our parents to nominate their favorite PreK-5th grade teachers (including specials teachers) for the $2,500 Shirley J. Lowrie “Thank You For Teaching” Award. All Montgomery County PreK through 5th teachers who work at Independent Education member schools (such as Barnesville) are eligible for this cash award, to be given directly to the chosen teacher. To be nominated, teachers must have submitted three letters of recommendation and a cover form signed by John Huber no later than March 11, 2011. We have a special connection to the award’s namesake, as Shirley was the mother of Lynn Longley, parent of two Barnesville alumni (Perri '09 and Kevin '06) and wife of former board chair Steve Longley. Please visit Independent Education’s website (www.independenteducation.org/news) to download a nomination form. | |
| 7th and 8th Grade Language Arts - "What's All the Chirping About?" | | . | Students are beginning to submit their design ideas and materials list in writing for the creation of their "Peeps" diorama project (a take-off on the annual Washington Post contest). Students are challenged make a diorama of a famous occurrence or scene which can be historic, current or future event; or a nod to pop culture. The one rule is that all characters in the diorama must be played by Peeps (bunnies and/or chicks).
Students work on their writing skills in that they must submit a proposal for their idea and write a synopsis explaining their diorama. There is an element of creativity involved in that they must create a 3-D display. Oral presentation skills are practiced when students present their dioramas to their classmates. Organizational skills include using class time wisely and effectively, and pre-planning to gather materials.
The "unveiling" of the PEEPS dioramas is scheduled for Monday, March 14th! The displays will be on tables in the middle school hallway just past the Admissions Office. Hope to see you there!
| 6th Grade Language Focus (Ms. Barnhart) - Poetry Analysis Assignment | | In 6th grade Language Focus class students were asked to create a visual representation of a poem using Power Point. First, students selected a poem of interest. Second, they identified themes, images and issues in their poems. They created individual slides for each with an explanation of why they represented their examples the way they did. Next, they highlighted the text of their three favorite lines in the poem. Students created a "works cited" slide by using
EasyBib, an online citation resource. Finally, the students gave an oral presentation of their Power Point in class. Please enjoy!
