From Our Head of School

.

As we come to the close of our school year and experience the mad rush of programs and activities which I chronicled in last week’s BITS, I want to draw your attention to two particular events of great importance. Both of these highlight the culmination of years of hard work and efforts.

First, this Friday June 3rd, our middle school students, faculty and I will be attending the Maryland Green Schools Ceremony and Youth Summit at Sandy Point, at which Barnesville will be formally granted its new certification as a Green School. This recognition comes at the end of a two year process, during which our parents, teachers, administrators, and students worked diligently both to document our current green processes and to push Barnesville to focus even more on outdoor and environmental education. This makes us the third independent school in Montgomery County to achieve this status. At the ceremony we’ll receive our Maryland Green School banner, which we’ll proudly display upon our return

Then, on Friday, June 10th at 10 AM, we will gather as a community for our annual 8th Grade Graduation Exercises. Each 8th grader will have the opportunity to speak about their experiences and the lessons they have learned during their time at Barnesville. This year’s young alumni speaker will be Mari Kordell ’07, who will be attending M.I.T. in the fall to study chemical engineering. This will also mark our first year to announce the selected 4th grade recipient of the Kupferberg Cup, and Ann Kupferberg will be returning to Barnesville to bestow this honor. I invite every parent to attend our graduation ceremony, so that you may see firsthand the final results of a Barnesville education as we send our 8th graders to secondary school and beyond.

Have a joyful Summer Break,

John Huber

Pre-K Stars of the Week

We had a great week with Cecelia and her family.  On Monday we celebrated Cecelia's birthday by making our own sundaes and hearing a story that was inspired by the birth of Cecelia 5 years ago.  Tuesday brought Cecelia's dad to the classroom to tell us the story of Passover.  We decorated our own akifomans (what holds your matzah and then you  hide it).  Cecelia and her dad hid an akifoman in the classroom and we had to find it!  On Wednesday we had a visit from Aunt Jane who brought the beach to us!  We met Piggle, Cecelia's hermit crab, decorated our own shells, had a beach dance party complete with sunglasses and leis.  We ended the day with some caramel corn direct from Rehobeth Beach and took home some swedish fish.  Yummy!  On Thursday we learned that Cecelia plays ice hockey.  Cecelia and her mom taught us how to get into hockey gear (there is a lot!) and then how to shoot a puck in the gym.  We each received a sticker for our hard work!  Finally, on Friday, Cecelia loves to pretend that she is different types of animals.  She has a great imagination.  We were each allowed to choose a stuffed animal from Cecelia's collection.  I then read to the class different facts about that animal and the class had to decide which animal it was.  If you were holding that animal, you got to get up and act that animal out.  Cecelia allowed us to play with the animals during center time and we danced to some animal music!  We also were delighted to eat some animal crackers for snack.  Thank you to Cecelia and her family for teaching us more about you!

We had a very fun final Star of the Week week with Tommy and his family :)  On Monday Tommy's grandparents came in and taught us some "street games" they used to play when they were kids.  That included Red Light, Green Light, marbles, a game using bottle caps where you have to slide the caps to each of the numbers in order (the name escapes me at the moment, but it was a fun game!), and box ball.  We ended the morning with root beer floats!  On Tuesday, Tommy's other grandma joined us in the classroom for a story which we acted out with the animals in the story and then we each got to make our own book mark!  Wednesday brought Tommy's mom to school to play with huge balloons, bubbles, and learn how to play t-ball (one of Tommy's favorite sports).  We ended the morning inside to cool down with a story and some popsicles. Yummy!!  Thursday brought Tommy's aunt to school.  We read a story about a worm keeping a diary and then made our own "dirt".  But this dirt was the kind we could eat.  It was chocolate pudding with crunched up oreo cookies and two gummy worms!  The highlight was painting with REAL worms.  We put them in some food coloring and water and then put them on our paper.  When they wiggled, they moved their paint around the paper.  Some worms needed a little nudging, but most did a great job painting for us :)  On Friday, Tommy's dad came in and read two super hero stories to us.  Then we each got to be a "Silly Super Hero" in a fun game where each of us got to make up our own super hero to act out for the class.  But in order to be a true super hero, you need a cape and that is just what Tommy and his family supplied for us!  We ended our day outside on the super windy playground - it almost felt like we were really flying :)  Thank you Tommy and your family for creating a very fun week for us!

Thank you to all of you for making the Star of the Week Program super special for each of your children!  I am always amazed each year that I do this that there is never a repeat of ideas and activities.  It just goes to show how unique each of your children are and how special each family is.
Communication, Marketing & Special Events
Promote Barnesville Over the Summer!

Marketing Barnesville is a year round process!  Here are just a couple ways that you can continue to support Barnesville while your children are out of school:
  • Put a Barnesville sign in your yard or garden telling friends and neighbors that you proudly support us.  Make sure to stop by my office to pick yours up next week!
  • Show off your Spirit Wear!  Put on those Barnesville T-shirts and sport them at the beach, fairs, amusement parks, and anywhere else you're having summer fun!
  • Bring your reusable bag!  Tote those groceries around in your Barnesville bag and save yourself the 5 cent bag charge!
  • Tell a friend!  Share your stories of your child's year at Barnesville-reflect on the great year and the exciting things to come in the fall-keep that Word of Mouth going!
Thank You Volunteers!

Thank you... to all of the volunteers that helped support Barnesville's marketing efforts.  Those of you who shared photos and videos, wrote a news story of an event, or told a friend about why they love Barnesville helped to get our name further into the community.

Thank you... to the volunteers who made our fundraising and school events so wildly successful.  Each moment of time that you gave to plan and carry out these events helped to significantly support the school, its faculty, and its students.

It's been a great pleasure working with you all this year-have a wonderful summer!!

~Nicole Campbell, Director of Communications and Marketing

A Note from Mrs. Nave

MEDICATION IN MY OFFICE

Please stop by my office on the last day of school to pick up any medication stored in my office for your child.  If not picked up, it has to be destroyed.  I may not keep it for next year or camp.  Call me if you have any questions.

Lost and Found

Please remember to check out our Lost and Found in the hall by the school store.  There are a lot of wonderful items that need to be reclaimed.

Tooth Box Report – Just for Fun!

The final tooth report of this school year!  5 tooth boxes left my office during the school day since May 16th.  I ran out of room on the May tooth poster.  May holds the record for the most teeth lost in a month during the 2010-2011 school year.    On May 19th and 23rd Josh Marett (3rd) lost teeth.  Julia Terrell (K) lost her tooth on May 19th by allowing Mrs. Nave to pull it.  On May 23rd and 25th, two tooth boxes left my office in the hands of Anna Morrison (5th) and Grace Brown (1st).

From the Library

Dear Families,

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the parent volunteers who have helped all year with library classes and library projects. You have lent a hand to support the Barnesville community and in the process instilled in our children the value of service.

I especially wish to express my gratitude to Kelly Greenawalt for two years of service as library volunteer coordinator. Kelly has kept everything running smoothly behind the scene by quietly and thoughtfully scheduling and planning for the library programs.

For our next school year there will be two library volunteer coordinators, Caroline Semancik and Paola Self. I appreciate their commitment to our school library and to the growing Spanish library in the 2011-2012 school year.

Enjoy a wonderful summer vacation reading and relaxing. Let me know what you find out there that would make a great addition to our collection.

Sincerely,

Cindy Barr

Facilities and Transportation
As usual, Facilities will have a busy summer getting ready for the September 7th first day of classes. We want to thank those parents who helped us in making our job a bit more easier during the 2010 - 2011 school year. Have a safe summer, and see you soon.

Admissions
Thank you for all of your support of the Admissions Office this year. A special thank you to the Open House volunteers, the Mentor Families and the awesome student "Admissions Ambassadors"! I am delighted that we will be welcoming so many new families to Barnesville this coming Fall! While the priority deadline for applications has passed, we are still accepting applications on a "rolling basis". Please be sure to continue to share your love for Barnesville with your friends and neighbors. Word of mouth is our very best advertising!

And don't forget our Referral Card program. If we enroll a new family referred by YOU between now and August 15, 2011, you could be eligible for $1,000! The special Referral Card waives the application fee for the prospective family. It's a win-win for everyone!

Have a fabulous summer!
