The fourth grade state displays filled the gymnasium this morning, and our students gave oral presentations to their parents and fellow students. The State Fair project helped our Lower School students to develop their research and computer skills, as well as their creativity and public speaking abilities. Our students loved to be "put on the spot" to answer any state fact which came their way! And, of course, everyone enjoyed sampling the food, a hallmark of this signature project.
Our Kindergarteners enjoyed a visit with our neighbors at Happy Choice Farm as part of their unit on farm life. They greeted the huge English Mastiffs, toured the new barn, picked some garden herbs, and learned about how to take care of horses. They even got to meet the newest additions to the farm, two donkeys named Dora and Penelope! Many thanks to the Pollins for this wonderful local field trip.
This morning our fifth graders donned period dress and brought famous figures of the Civil War to life in a public presentation to their parents and fellow students. In attendance were Clara Barton, Ulysses S. Grant, and George McClellan, as well as lesser-known contributors such as Belle Boyd and Elizabeth "Crazy Bet" Van Lew. Students also joined together in song for such tunes as "The Bonnie Blue Flag" and "Battle Hymn of the Republic".
As part of our 4th grade social studies lessons, our students visited the Seneca Schoolhouse Museum to learn about life in the 19th century. In order to put themselves in the places of students from an earlier time, our 4th graders put on period dress for the trip.
For his Eagle Scout project, alumnus Reed Milbrath '07 completed a second stage of Barnesville's new Low Ropes Course, created by Austin Fiedler '07 back in December. Reed and his team of volunteers erected a climbing wall, put a post fence around the course, and chipped a significant pile of wood. We can't wait to get our students out to the course to try the stations!
This morning our three- and four-year-olds reviewed their shapes with Mrs. Chaffman and Mrs. Jordan. Later on they created colorful rectangle collages. Our young students certainly know their shapes very well!
Each year our third grade teachers lead the students in a "Book Parade". After weeks of research, our third graders presented biographies of historical and modern figures, including Jim Thorpe, Georgia O'Keefe, and George Washington Carver. Students paraded down the hallway with their artistic floats and gave oral reports to the assembled parents and students. Well done, third graders!
Congratulations to both our middle school basketball teams for their strong seasons. Both teams played well and found victory on the court. Once again our boys' team reached the MJAC tournament, finishing fourth overall in a hard fought match against Trinity.
We bid farewell to our four Peruvian exchange students from the Leonardo da Vinci School in Lima today. As part of our annual middle school exchange program, students spent three weeks visiting Barnesville and the greater Washington region. Yesterday our 8th graders and exchange students performed a Spanish play titled "Se Venden Gorras" and enjoyed a goodbye meal. Today, our entire middle school heads to Ski Liberty for a day of outdoor joy and activity.
As part of their unit on colonial America, our 4th graders learn to embroider in art class. Students developed their own designs with multiple colors of thread and learned basic stitching techniques. We even talked about the Bayeux Tapestry, an 11th century embroidery depicting the Battle of Hastings.
For our annual Peace Week celebration ahead of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, our students took part in a school-wide Peace Parade. Students gathered in the gym to sing, talk about their community service activities, and observe a candle lighting ceremony
Barnesville alumnus Austin Fiedler '07 helped develop a Low Ropes Course for the students of his alma mater. As part of his Eagle Scout project, Austin created an outdoor learning space for the school.
Enjoy some candid photos from Grandparents Day!
Today in art class, our Kindergarteners learned about the works of the American painter Wayne Thiebaud as part of their unit on the letter "T". Students created lollipops, cupcakes, and birthday cakes. As one student shouted proudly, "I'm an artist, you know!" Indeed he is, as are they all.
