The Barnesville School and BlackRock Joint Project

The Barnesville School and BlackRock Center for the Arts collaborated with world renowned mobile sculptor and actor Kevin Reese, Dec. 5 through 9, to create a one-of-a-kind mobile in honor of BlackRock’s 10th anniversary. The finished mobile, installed Dec. 9, hangs in the BlackRock lobby through the 2011-2012 season and will then hang in permanence in The Barnesville School’s library. The installation at BlackRock is Reese’s 100th.

Reese spent the week working with Barnesville’s middle school students (grades 5 – 8) to create the structure based on designs the students sent to him earlier in the school year.

"We are thrilled to have an artist and educator of Kevin's caliber working with our students," said John Huber, Head of School at The Barnesville School, "and we are very excited to watch the students' ideas come to life through his design. The harmony between science and the arts is brought to life through this mobile project. And we are also so pleased to build this link with BlackRock, as it underscores the value of working closely with our community partners.  Black Rock is an outstanding organization, and we look forward to our next collaborative project."

Charlotte Sommers, Executive Director of BlackRock says that “during BlackRock’s 10th Anniversary year, we are especially pleased to collaborat with Kevin Reese and the Barnesville School. Their mobile is a beautiful testament to the power of the arts in learning and in our community. We will enjoy sharing it with the greater Germantown community until May.”

Kevin Reese’s company, SchoolSculptures With Kevin Reese, has, since 2001, worked with schools and communities to create high-flying mobiles and swirling stabiles. Kevin recently completed his most far-flung mobile--in Taipei, Taiwan--in November.

The mobile’s official unveiling took place at BlackRock Center for the Arts on Dec. 9 at Noon in front of The Barnesville eighth graders and Kindergarteners, and officials from The Barnesville School and BlackRock. The mobile will be permanently installed in The Barnesville School’s library on May 24, 2012, as a part of their Arts & Academics Night event. Artist Kevin Reese will attend both installations.
