This section of the Barnesville Summer Camp is a traditional day camp designed for students entering Preschool (age 3) through second grade in Fall 2012. Campers
can attend for a half-day or full-day. (Campers in the three's program must be eligible to enter preschool in the fall and must be potty trained.)
Recreational camp activities are offered in the morning session on Monday through Thursday of each week. An hour lunch and quiet time break follows the morning fun each day, with the afternoons devoted to Themed Camps. The themes change each week, but are all filled with games, arts and crafts, and age appropriate field trips.
Academic Camps for children entering EC 3's through 2nd grade are offered the last week of camp, August 6-10.
Fridays are full-day field trips to Cunningham Falls or Greenbriar State Parks.
June 18-22: It's a Jungle Out There
Lions, and tigers, and monkeys, and elephants, oh my! Join us on a journey through the jungle. Visit with the amazing creatures that call the jungle home. Campers will hear jungle tales, play jungle games, and make jungle crafts. We may even take a trip to the jungle – you never know!
June 25-29: Folk Tales
Stories and legends are part of our American culture. This week campers will hear many of these famous tales. Learn about Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan, Davey Crockett, Daniel Boone and others. We will explore Native American legends as well.
July 9-13: Going Green
At the Barnesville School we care about our environment! This week focuses on environmentally friendly activities. We will spend time in the school garden, complete recycled art projects and take a green field trip. Reduce… Reuse… Recycle!
July 15-20: Space is the Place
Twinkle, twinkle little star…. The night sky is full of many mysteries. Why do the stars twinkle? What are the pictures we sometimes see in the stars? What else is out there? Campers learn about stars, planets, comets, asteroids and more. Hear stories, make crafts and visit a planetarium with us this week.
I wonder what it would be like to live in Mexico, or Italy, or Africa. Take a journey around the world to see what kids do for fun in other countries. Play games, make crafts, hear stories and taste foods from around the world during this week of camp.
July 30-August 3: Olympics
While the athletes are competing in London, join us for the Barnesville Summer Camp Olympics! Each day brings new challenges and contests. Learn how to play some of the sports you see on television.
Since the Olympics are in London this year, let’s visit the Queen. Join us for a lesson in being a king, queen, prince, or princess. Dress up, build a castle, and enjoy an afternoon tea. This week is all about the Royals!
August 6-10: Academic Camps
Fight the summer brain drain and get a jump start on the new school year. Our academic camps will prepare your child for the challenges of the new academic year. These camps are offered during week 7.
Get Ready for EC 3’s
This camp is designed to prepare children for the transition into preschool. Each day
the campers follow a routine similar to the one they will follow at school. The routine includes interactive story time, where the campers act out the story as the teacher reads; beginning number skills during math time; science activities; and craft projects designed to promote creativity and fine motor skills. This camp gives children the opportunity to meet new friends and get used to the classroom setting before the first day of school.
Get Ready for Pre-K
Get Ready for Pre-K is an opportunity for campers to remember the routine of going to school. The schedule we follow at camp is similar to a typical day in Pre-K. Students will participate in interactive story time with fun activities to work on their letter and word recognition skills; review number skills during math time; and refine their fine motor skills with fun craft projects. Of course, the day includes plenty of play time and lots of fun!
Get Ready for K
Kindergarten is a very important year in a child’s development. Give your child a head start on some of the essential skills needed for success in Kindergarten and beyond. Campers work on letter skills, writing their names, fine motor skills, and word recognition skills. They also work on number skills, working and playing together, and sharing. Basic classroom routines are also be introduced.
Get Ready for 1st Grade
First grade can be a time of incredible academic growth for a child. Children in this camp get a head start working on some early reading and math skills they will encounter during first grade such as rhyming, listening comprehension, letter sound/correspondence for vowels, orally blending sounds to make words, measurement, time, coin values, sharing supplies, and taking turns.
Get Ready for 2nd Grade
Second grade students build on the foundation developed in Kindergarten and first grade and take their skills to the next level. Children in this camp get a head start working on some of the essential skills needed to be successful in second grade and beyond. Some examples include reading high frequency words, reading decodable texts, letter/sound correspondence for vowels and consonants, blending letter sounds to read words, measurement, money values, and time.
