Peace Week

From January 10th to January 14th, we will be celebrating our annual Peace Week.  Our theme this year is GIVE LIGHT.  Our way to "give light" is to team with Heifer International to raise money to buy goats for Haiti.  The 5th graders have been presenting Power Point presentations about Haiti in Morning Meeting.  We are asking the students to do chores or acts of kindness at home to raise $5.00 towards to the purchase of a goat.  We will be sending an email home on Monday to outline the campaign in more detail.

Other events for Peace Week will include our annual movie festival on Thursday, January 13th and our Peace Parade and Assembly on Friday, Jan. 14th.  We are hoping to have some great speakers talk to our middle school students as well.

Kindergarten Ventures Into the Community
Kindergarten students are learning about community helpers.  On January 19th they will be traveling to Fire Station 22 in Germantown for a tour of the facilities and a talk by the fire fighters.  Following that, they will be given a tour of the Kingsview Village Giant and will learn how valuable the produce workers, bakers, cooks, butchers, stockers and cashiers are in the daily functioning of a grocery store.  They will also focus on how each person's job joins forces to make a community function safely, healthily and smoothlyl

Kids' Club Updates

Happy New Year from Kids’ Club!  It has been an absolute blast being back at Barnesville and working with our amazing young people again.   A robust crew of regular attendees, as well as our many occasional visitors, has enjoyed an excellent year thus far; the New Year brings some changes, but looks to be just as exciting and productive for our clubbers.

The biggest change coming to Kids’ Club will be the departure of Ms. Amanda Womack, who will be transferring to the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.  Her commute to Kids' Club would have been a killer, especially with all that snow they get up there!  She will be greatly missed!  In the coming weeks, I will introduce you to the people that will be following in her footsteps, but today I just wanted to wish Amanda all the best at school!

In addition, a few minor changes will also be seen for 2011.  The first of those changes will be the need to sign the students out of Kids’ Club as they are picked up.  This should not be too onerous; just a quick initialing on our daily attendance sheet will suffice.   Another addition for the New Year will be several themed days in Kids’ Club throughout the year.  Falling on different days of the week to include as many of our regulars as possible, the days will include special snacks and activities for the students.  The first of these days will come towards the end of the month as we say goodbye to Amanda with a celebration to include some New York style pizza and fun activities inspired by her move to New York for school!

Lastly, I suppose this article will serve as a bit of a change for the New Year.  I hope to bring you regular updates of life after school during 2011 in BITS and Tidbits.  Thanks for all of your support in 2010 and here’s to a marvelous 2011!

~James Robertson, Director of Kids' Club
