The Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences Class of 2021 graduation ceremony was held on Wednesday, June 9. Because of pandemic health restrictions, the graduation ceremony was restricted to families and faculty, who joined together to celebrate the achievements of the eighth grade graduating class.
Head of School Susanne Johnson commented on the courage and perseverance displayed by the students in the face of challenges brought by the pandemic, many of whom were virtual for most of their 8th grade year. “The pandemic has tested all of us and forced us to draw deeply on the core characteristics that we seek to instill in our students on a daily basis. You have demonstrated perseverance as you pushed through a year like no other. I am proud of your initiative and courage as you faced such uncertainty.”
True to tradition, each graduate delivered a speech reflecting back on the experiences, teachers, field trips, and friendships that defined their Barnesville education. Graduates shared many joyful experiences, despite their shift to virtual instruction for part of their 7th and 8th grade years.
Mrs. Johnson previewed the student speeches as inspiration for her remarks. “When asked what Barnesville has taught you, your comments echoed the core character values that we work to instill on a daily basis: to be kind, courteous, creative, and a leader.” She continued, “When asked what Barnesville gave you, you responded without hesitation saying: opportunities, confidence, an amazing school experience, and a place to call a second home.”
Annual awards were presented to the following students:
Kupferberg Cup Award, for a 4th grader selected by the faculty who displays great character and leadership potential – Payton Caffee and Sia Reyes
