Barnesville School of ARTS & SCIENCES... the "&" is EVERYTHING
The "&" in Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences serves as a symbol of what we value. It represents the cross-curricular nature of our teaching. It represents partnerships with local art, science, and educational organizations that bring classroom concepts to life through engaging field studies. It represents the many and varied opportunities for personal growth that a Barnesville education offers students beyond academics, such as the Buddy program, sports teams, visual and performing arts, and community service.
The "&" also represents the personal connections that are the true power of our community -- the close relationships teachers are able to make with each and every student, the lasting friendships students develop with one another across grade-levels, and the bonds families make as our children grow up together.
The "&" symbolizes the opportunities Barnesville offers students to IMAGINE, EXPLORE, GROW, & ACHIEVE.
Welcome from the Head of School
Welcome to Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences! I invite you to visit our school and see first hand how small class settings foster a culture of joy, support and excellence. Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding. This cross-curricular approach fosters skills that help students approach issues with a critical mind.
Far from standard
Barnesville makes the most of the small class settings and personalized teaching only available at an independent private school. Our integrated cross-curricular approach helps students understand key relationships between subjects, strengthening critical thinking and comprehension of real-world concepts. Teachers have the freedom to tailor their instruction to individual learning styles and use their endless creativity to bring lessons to life for each student. We introduce Spanish language and customs to children beginning in Preschool, and enable Middle School students to learn Spanish through immersion experiences that strengthen speaking proficiency and cultural appreciation.
An extraordinary campus
We occupy a beautiful 30-acre campus on rolling country hills just 15 minutes from Germantown and Frederick. It is a point of pride for us that Barnesville is the only accredited independent school in the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve. This location is an ideal place for students to learn and play inside and outside the classroom, and offers daily opportunities to explore the natural world and develop a respect for the environment. In addition, we are a Maryland Green School certified by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. We seek to maintain our roots in rural tradition by involving our students both in our local community and the great outdoors.
The Barnesville Way
Our unique emphasis on community and responsibility to one another is what we call The Barnesville Way. Each morning, we greet students in car line before our school-wide morning meeting, and take time to learn what is going on in each child's world. We model mutual respect by shaking each student's hand to start the day. We value every individual's point of view and seek to be as inclusive as possible while maintaining a challenging and stimulating learning environment.
This outlook is reflected in our mission and longstanding culture of joy, support, and excellence. Our students derive joy from hands-on learning experiences and memorable educational opportunities. Our dedicated staff provides extensive support and individual attention to help students reach their potential. And our excellence comes from the encouragement and inspiration our students receive from each other and our staff to succeed and to accomplish goals.
While our website provides an abundance of information, I urge you to visit Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences in person to see firsthand the benefits of a Barnesville education. We look forward to seeing you and shaking your hand as well!
