Lasting happiness is something we all thrive for. But, why is that? What makes us happy in the long run? There are numerous studies about the subject. One of the longest standing studies is the Grant Study. 72 years in the making, researchers at Harvard have been trying to figure out the formula to what makes us happy. One of it’s findings is that, a loving childhood is one of the best predictors of mid and late-life riches. So take note parents :). There are other things associated with happier people, like significant relationships and healthy social interactions. George Vaillant, who directed the study for more than three decades, feels strongly that there is a powerful correlation between the warmth of your relationships and your health and happiness in old age. And after all this time Vaillant sums it up in this five-word conclusion: “Happiness is love. Full stop.”
The root to happiness is seated inside every one of us. It is up to you to access it and help it grow! It really is that simple, acknowledging it is the first step to a happier life.
Hera are six steps that will help you cultivate happiness:
Being present to experience life is a crucial step to experiencing lasting happiness. That means we live more in the moment, not in the past or future. After all, that is all we have. We just have right now.
Lead a healthy lifestyle
A healthy diet is associated with greater physical health and overall better mood. Keeping active and exercising leads to more energy, losing weight and a more positive outlook.
Begin with yourself. Give yourself lots of love. Then, share that love with others. Be generous with your time, energy, expertise, even with money when you can.
It has been proven that being grateful helps access more happiness. Before you go to bed at night, say “thank you” and remember all the good things that happened that day. In the morning, before you even put your feet on the ground to get out of bed, say “thank you”. It will set you up to a good start.
Make time for your loved ones. Go out with your friends and have fun! Support those meaningful relationships because in turn they will support you.
Love what you do, because what you do has meaning. If you happen to hate what you do for a living, it might be time to re-examine things :). Make time to do the things you love. Those are the things that will have the greatest impact on your life, and the lives of those around you.
