Fifth Graders Explore History at Fort McHenry
Posted 12/19/2018 09:35PM

Barnesville fifth graders finished up their social studies segment on the War of 1812 with a visit to Fort McHenry in Baltimore where they toured the fort, including guard houses and soldiers’ barracks.

As part of their visit, students helped the park rangers lower and fold a flag. This program explained the variety of flags that are used at Fort McHenry as well as the history of the original battle flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Participating in the flag-changing was particularly meaningful for the class, as they are responsible for raising the flag at school each morning.
