Local Woodwork Artist Carves Path for Barnesville Students to Participate in National Waterfowl Art Competition

Barnesville students are participating in the national Laughing Gull art contest. Working under the guidance of wildfowl woodcarving specialist, Gary Stenger, students are decorating miniature wooden birds that will be submitted for the 46th Annual Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition and Art Festival, held in Ocean City this April.

“We are very fortunate to be working with Mr. Stenger as part of our partnership with Black Hill Regional Park,” said Tara Barnhart, Barnesville School’s Arts & Sciences Coordinator. “When he learned about our efforts to integrate art with science and environmental education, he not only suggested this project, he also generously offered to sponsor each Barnesville student's entry fee to be part of the competition. We are thrilled to have his support and expert instruction.”

Based on contest regulations, Barnesville’s Director of Facilities, Bernie Weintraub, cut out wooden bird silhouettes. Middle school students then sanded the cut-outs to prepare them for painting. Students in Preschool through 8th grade each painted their own wooden bird, using the three required paint colors to reflect the colors of this year’s selected laughing gull. The next time Mr. Stenger visits Barnesville, he will demonstrate wood carving techniques that add texture.

After the competition, students will get to keep their artwork.
