Welcome
Helen Miller as our new Middle School Science Teacher; Maryland Association for Environmental & Outdoor Education (MAEOE) Coordinator. Helen has a BS in Biology, Secondary Education minor from Loyola University Maryland and is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science. She has spent the last year teaching 9th grade Biology at Reading High School, Reading PA. Her field experience includes Special Education at Baltimore Lab School and Secondary Education at Archbishop Curley High School. Helen’s internships included 7th & 9th grade Science at Baltimore Design School and 10th grade Science focused on living systems at Overlea High School. Helen brings her passion of science to life by crafting engaging lessons that hold creativity, technology, and inquiry at its core. She is known for her ability to build excellent rapport with her students. 

Additionally, as announced in January, Jim James will be joining the faculty/administration as Dean of Academics and Middle School Social Studies Teacher. Jim has 30 years of teaching experience in Independent Schools in both History and English. Additionally, Jim has vast administrative experience in leadership, admissions and financial aid. He recently served as the Associate Director of Admissions at Saint James School as well as an English and History Teacher. Prior to this role, he was Head of School at the Trinity School of Frederick. We are excited to have Jim bringing his extensive experience in curriculum development to this newly created position of Dean of Academics. Jim has a Master of Arts in English, Middlebury College; Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Wesleyan University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Bates College. Jim is also a proud parent of an Alumni, Chris (Class of 2019).

Welcome Lauren Burr as our new Social Media & Website Specialist. Lauren has a BA, Early Childhood Education, from Towson University; Master of Education, Early Childhood Education, from American College of Education and an Equity & Excellence in Education Certificate from McDaniel College. She has seven years of teaching experience with a passion for meeting the needs of all learners through play-based, student-centered, differentiated instruction. Lauren is a self-proclaimed “techy” and has a built and managed a website and handled the social media promotion for Barrier Free, a local arts non-profit. She has successfully grown their presence from almost non-existent to a top-page google hit with a substantial social media following. We look forward to Lauren bringing her creativity and a teacher’s “eye” to our website and social media presence.

Furthermore, welcome
Janet Hamilton, a familiar member of our community, to her new role as Administrative Assistant. Janet began her career at Barnesville in 2008 as a Kindergarten Teaching Aide. In 2011 she transitioned to be our Early Childhood Teacher and Early Bird/Kids Club Director. Since 2017 Janet has been a substitute teacher supporting Lower School, Middle School, and the front office. She thrives on the diverse demands of the Administrative Assistant and looks forward to supporting our community in this new role.

Lastly, Barnesville School is delighted to welcome Hamilton Hayes to this exceptional team as our Lower School & Middle School Music Teacher. Hamilton has a Bachelor and Master of Music from Howard University. Hamilton has five years of music teaching experience with elementary, middle and high school students in general music appreciation, music theory, singing, music technology, instrumental performance, and songwriting. Prior to teaching he was a guest lecturer in the music department at Howard University College of Arts and Sciences; Division of Fine Arts. Hamilton is an accomplished musician, composer, and performer. His number one classroom rule is for students to enjoy class and understand the joy of learning music. Hamilton is known for his engagement with his students and taking a personal stake in their success.
