Students, staff, and Barnesville families gathered on November 11, 2021 to honor our veterans and thank them for their service to our country.
Veterans Day is intended to honor all those who have honorably served in the armed forces in times of war and peace. The Barnesville School has a long-standing tradition of honoring military service members and our annual Veterans Day ceremony is organized by a committee led by Dona Kaufman, the School’s Teaching and Learning Coordinator.
The Barnesville community was honored to welcome Buzz Ireland, a retired military service member to speak with our students about his service to our country. Buzz Ireland enlisted in the United States Army in 1967 and became part of the Army Security Agency. In 1968 he entered Officers Candidate school and from there went on to jump school. He served as a Recon Platoon leader in the 82nd Airborne Division. Buzz Ireland attended flight school after which he flew and commanded a Ch47 Chinook Helicopter Platoon with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam. Additionally, he served in the 18th Airborne Corp Aviation Battalion. He left the service in 1973.
In addition to Buzz Ireland's sharing, students honored America's veterans by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, singing The Star-Spangled Banner, sharing readings, participating in a moment of silence, and placing flags around the school's garden and driveway.
Today there are more than 24 million veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We thank each of them for their service. Thank you.
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
