At Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences, learning goes beyond textbooks and classroom walls. During our first Collaborative Learning Day of the school year, students came together to explore food insecurity, challenge their perspectives, and discover how collective action can make a difference.
On Thursday, October 8, students across all grade levels came together for the first Collaborative Learning Day of the school year, focusing on food insecurity, food justice, and the importance of ensuring everyone has access to nutritious food.
The day began with an all-school gathering before students broke into their Social Change groups for discussions and activities centered on understanding food insecurity and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
Through shared readings, conversations, and collaborative learning, students explored the causes of food insecurity, the challenges families may face in accessing food, and the systems that contribute to these inequalities. Students also examined the roles individuals can take as changemakers and food justice advocates, connecting their learning to the larger idea that everyone has a part to play in building stronger, more equitable communities.
Turning Learning Into Action
As the day continued, students put their discussions into action through hands-on activities designed to raise awareness and encourage community involvement.
Working together across grade levels, students created colorful posters and signs for Barnesville’s upcoming Walk-a-Thon, using artwork and messages to highlight the importance of food justice and inspire others to get involved.
Students also participated in activities that challenged them to think critically about food systems and possible solutions to food insecurity. From identifying barriers within food systems to imagining communities where everyone has access to the resources they need, these activities encouraged students to see themselves as part of the solution.
The day’s focus also connected to Barnesville’s food drive collection efforts, providing another opportunity for our school community to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. Through these collective efforts, students are learning that even small acts of kindness and generosity can contribute to meaningful change.
Learning That Extends Beyond the Classroom
While Collaborative Learning Day provided dedicated time to explore these important issues, the work does not stop here.
At Barnesville, many of our lessons, projects, and community initiatives connect throughout the school year. The conversations students begin during Collaborative Learning Days continue in classrooms, through service-learning opportunities, and in the ways they engage with the world around them.
Whether through food collections, community partnerships, environmental stewardship, or student-led projects, our students are encouraged to carry what they learn beyond a single lesson or event.
Collaborative Learning Day is one example of how #TheBarnesvilleWay brings together academic learning, meaningful relationships, and a commitment to making a difference.
As students continue exploring social change throughout the year, they are reminded that creating a more compassionate and equitable world begins with awareness, grows through understanding, and becomes possible through action.
