Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences is proud to be one of the few independent private schools in Montgomery County certified as a Maryland Green School by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE).

Gardening
Students work with their classmates and in Buddy Groups to grow vegetables in the School’s raised garden beds that were designed and built by students.

Apple Wednesdays
Each Wednesday in the fall, students enjoy apples from local orchards as a healthy snack. They learn about the importance of locally-sourced food and participate in composting the apple cores.

Pollinator Garden
Students cultivate a garden space with native plants to nurture pollinators. Barnesville is certified as a National Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.
Barnesville School is in the unique position of being the only independent private school located on the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve. Our location provides the ideal setting for connecting our students to the outdoors. We are able to integrate nature into our everyday learning by using this beautiful space as another classroom.
To be certified as a MAEOE Green School, Barnesville demonstrated achievement in three areas: curriculum and instruction, community partnerships, and best management practices. Since receiving our certification in 2011 and recertifications in 2015 and 2019, we have continued our commitment to Green School standards.

Storm Drain Awareness
Students stencil informative messages on storm drain covers around campus to remind people to keep harmful pollutants out of storm water and thus out of the Chesapeake Bay.

Earth Day Festival
Seventh graders plan and lead the School’s annual Earth Day Festival with hands-on games, crafts, and activities that raise awareness about ecology and environmental science.

Recycling
In addition to ongoing school-wide paper and plastic recycling efforts, Barnesville participates in the TerraCycle program to recycle common but hard-to-recycle materials such as snack wrappers.
The School’s administration and faculty continue to build a curriculum that develops students as good stewards of the environment. The children enjoy learning in the outdoor classroom, getting dirty in the raised bed garden, and exploring on school grounds. There are many ways for children to discover life and connect with nature.
