Every school has a story to tell, but it is the people, experiences, and connections within its community that make that story meaningful. For Kay’La Portee, Associate Director of Marketing & Communications at Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences, her work centers on bringing those stories to life through thoughtful communication, creative strategy, and authentic engagement.
With seven years of experience in marketing and communications, Kay’La has built a diverse professional background working with small businesses, nonprofit organizations, and large organizations. Her expertise spans strategic communications, brand development, digital marketing, graphic design, social media management, integrated marketing campaigns, and creative direction.
Kay’La attended Susquehanna University and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and a Bachelor of Science in Luxury Brand Marketing and Management. Her academic background combines creative expertise with strategic business and brand management, shaping her approach to developing communications that are both visually compelling and aligned with organizational goals.
For the past two and a half years, Kay’La has contributed to strengthening Barnesville’s brand presence and communications strategy. In her role, she manages a wide range of marketing and communications initiatives, including digital brand management, website communications, advertising campaigns, graphic design, photography, video production, and community engagement. Through this work, she supports enrollment initiatives and communicates the value of the Barnesville educational experience.
Strategic Storytelling: Bringing the Barnesville Experience to Life
For Kay’La, one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is the opportunity to share the many experiences that make Barnesville such a distinctive learning community.
“What I enjoy most about Barnesville is the abundance of stories and experiences happening around us every day. Our students are what truly bring those stories to life. Whether I’m documenting classroom learning, highlighting a student achievement, or having a conversation with a student, those interactions are often the highlight of my day.”
One particularly meaningful initiative was Barnesville’s “Be a Photographer for the Day” experience, where Kay’La mentored a sixth-grade student in photography, visual storytelling, and creative production.
Throughout the experience, she introduced the student to digital and film photography, exploring composition, lighting, perspective, and the creative decisions behind compelling imagery.
“If there’s one thing I hope students take away from their interactions with me, it’s that their creativity and perspective have value. You don’t have to think like everyone else or follow a traditional path to make an impact. Be curious, ask questions, explore your interests, and don’t be afraid to see the world differently.”
Kay’La believes creativity is not limited to artistic expression. It is an essential component of leadership, innovation, strategic thinking, and problem-solving. Through her work and mentorship, she hopes to encourage students to recognize their potential and approach new experiences with curiosity and an open mind.
Beyond Barnesville
Outside of her professional work, Kay’La enjoys exploring new cities, spending time outdoors, and finding inspiration through new experiences.
One fun fact about Kay’La is that she is a fraternal twin, born just one minute apart from her sibling!
An avid nature enthusiast, she enjoys hikes, outdoor adventures, and exploring new places with her service dog, River.
Her appreciation for nature and photography often intersect, allowing her to slow down, observe her surroundings, and approach the world with curiosity and a fresh perspective.
Whether she’s developing a new communications strategy or exploring a trail with River, Kay’La values opportunities to learn, create, and connect.
