The assembly continued conversations that began during
Barnesville’s first Collaborative Learning Day of the school year, when students explored food insecurity, food justice, and the challenges many families face in accessing nutritious meals.
During the assembly, students had an opportunity to reflect on what they had learned and consider how food insecurity affects individuals and communities. The gathering encouraged students to think about the importance of access to food and the ways people can work together to address this issue.
Following the assembly, students and faculty participated in a community walk, bringing the school together in a shared effort to raise awareness. Students intentionally looked at hand-made signs across our 30-acre campus. The walk offered students a chance to put their classroom discussions into practice while showing their support for families experiencing food insecurity.
Connecting Classroom Learning to Community Action
By engaging students in conversations about real-world challenges like food insecurity, we encourage them to ask thoughtful questions, examine different perspectives, and recognize their ability to make a difference.
Throughout this initiative, students have been learning that food insecurity is not always visible and can affect families in many different circumstances. By discussing these challenges across grade levels, students are developing a greater understanding of the needs of others and the importance of community support.
The assembly and walk provided another opportunity to build on these lessons, connecting what students have learned in the classroom with actions they can take outside of it.
As part of these ongoing efforts, Barnesville is also hosting a schoolwide food drive in support of WUMCO Help, a local nonprofit organization that provides food assistance and essential resources to individuals and families in need. Through donations of nonperishable food items, Barnesville families have an opportunity to directly support neighbors experiencing food insecurity.
The food drive reinforces the lessons students have explored throughout this initiative, showing how community partnerships and individual contributions can help address local needs.
Continuing the Conversation
Addressing food insecurity requires ongoing awareness, education, and community involvement. For Barnesville students, the experience was a reminder that even small efforts can contribute to a larger cause.
Through initiatives like the assembly, walk, and food drive, Barnesville continues to provide opportunities for students to learn about the world around them, engage in meaningful conversations, and take an active role in supporting their communities.
We thank our students, families, faculty, and staff for their continued participation and contributions to the food drive, as well as WUMCO Help for its ongoing work supporting families throughout our local community.
The Food Insecurity Assembly and Walk was one more example of Barnesville students coming together to learn, participate, and make a difference.
