Our 8th-grade trip to Black Hill Regional Park was a total success, filled with incredible artwork, community connections, birding adventures, and lots of laughter. Thank you to the Esler family for gifting this experience to the Class of 2026!
During our trip, students participated in a beautiful place-based learning experience through plein air painting at the lake. Each student found their own “sit spot” along the water and created a painting inspired by what they saw around them. Some carefully observed the landscape, while others let their imagination take the lead. It was wonderful to see each artist connect with nature in their own unique way.
We also experienced a truly rare and magical nature moment. A gorgeous white swan flew directly over us and landed on the lake. Our resident birding expert, Ryan Carr, immediately identified it as a Mute Swan. Our wonderful nature-based educator, Christy, from Black Hill kindly ran to the Discovery Center to grab binoculars, and Ryan confirmed the sighting, noting that this is something you might only see once in a while!
After I texted Ryan’s mom, Katherine, word spread quickly. Soon, local birders were coming out of the woodwork with their long-lens cameras to catch a glimpse of this special visitor. It became such a beautiful example of how art, nature, birding, and community can all come together. This lovely swan, along with Ryan’s expertise and enthusiasm, created a meaningful moment that connected people across our larger community.
As we close out the year, I just want everyone to know how much of a delight this 8th-grade class has been to work with over the years. They are especially close to my heart because they were my very first homeroom class when they were in 5th grade. It has been such a true joy to watch them bloom, grow, and evolve as humans, artists, and upstanders.
I am deeply grateful to have witnessed their learning journey at Barnesville and to see them shine so brightly as artists. They have taught me just as much as I hope I have taught them, and I know they will continue to bring creativity, compassion, and courage wherever they go next.
And one thing is for sure—I will forever think of the Class of 2026 and smile whenever we play Dancing Queen in the art room.
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
