Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences has been a certified Maryland Green School for fifteen years and is currently completing its fifth application cycle for years 15-18. This process ensures that the school continues to uphold the standards and dedication associated with this certification and that Barnesville’s curriculum, instruction, community partnerships, and best management practices all reflect a strong commitment to the values and practices of being a Maryland certified Green School.
Did you know…
That Barnesville is the one of two independent schools in Montgomery County that is certified as a Maryland Green School by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE).
To support the ongoing commitment to environmental education and ensure Barnesville’s curriculum aligns with MAEOE standards, a new class, Nature Explorers, was recently created by Early Childhood through 8th Grade Art Teacher and MAEOE Coordinator, Alika Middleton.
Nature Explorers was crafted to build meaningful connections with nature and students through exploration, mindfulness, seasonal observation, and hands-on outdoor experiences. Held every Thursday, the school offers two sessions where Preschool, Lower School (K-4), and Middle School (5-8) rotate by grade to participate in engaging, nature-based learning opportunities.
Explorers build confidence, resilience, independence, and teamwork while taking supported risks and learning about the natural world around them. Students practice stewardship and sustainability while learning to care for the land, grow food, and take meaningful action at Barnesville and in their own communities.
“No bad weather, just bad clothing” has quickly become the motto of Nature Explorers. Students come to class dressed for the elements, ready to get dirty, wet, and fully immersed in the outdoors. Whether it’s raining, muddy, snowing, or rays of sunshine, our student explorers embrace the opportunity of hands-on outdoor learning and exploration!
