Growing Our Future: Barnesville Plants 425 Trees for the "5 Million Trees" Initiative
The landscape at Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences is getting a major green upgrade! This week, our campus became a living part of Maryland’s environmental history as a crew from the Department of Natural Resources arrived to plant 425 new trees and shrubs on our dedicated one-acre plot.
This project is a proud contribution to the Maryland 5 Million Trees Initiative, an ambitious state-wide goal to plant a tree for every Marylander by 2031. By participating, Barnesville is helping the state work toward removing an estimated 30,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.
A Classroom Without Walls
While the planting was handled by a professional crew of 10–15 experts, the event served as a powerful "teachable moment" for our students. Classes headed outdoors to witness the process firsthand, watching as a "little forest" took root in our own backyard.
Our new woods feature a diverse mix of native species carefully selected to support local wildlife and biodiversity, including:
- Fruit & Nut Bearers: Pawpaw, Persimmon, Hazelnut, and Shellbark Hickory.
- Pollinator Favorites: Flowering Dogwood and Serviceberry.
- Stately Canopy Trees: White Oak, Sugar Maple, and Scarlet Oak.
Celebrating 15 Years as a Certified Green School
This planting isn't just a one-off event; it is a milestone in our ongoing commitment to the environment. Barnesville is officially in its 15th year as a Certified Green School through the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE).
Under the leadership of Alika Middleton, our K-8 Art Teacher and MAEOE Coordinator, sustainability has become woven into the fabric of #TheBarnesvilleWay. From reducing our carbon footprint to enhancing our local watershed, these 425 trees represent just one of many initiatives designed to teach our students how to be stewards of the earth.
Why It Matters
Trees do more than just beautify our campus; they are essential to our climate strategy. They cool our neighborhoods, restore our streams, and capture carbon. As these saplings grow into a thriving forest, they will provide a legacy of cleaner air and thriving wildlife for generations of Barnesville students to come.
