International Night: A Celebration of Culture and Connection at Barnesville

At the Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences, our core values of Joy, Support, and Excellence are more than just words on a mission statement—they are the foundation of our community. This was never more apparent than during our recent International Night, an unforgettable evening that brought our "You Belong" philosophy to life through culture, connection, and shared heritage.
The gymnasium was transformed into a global village, proving that while our 30-acre campus sits in the heart of the Maryland Agricultural Reserve, our community's roots span the entire world.

A Powerful Beginning

The evening commenced with a deeply moving highlight: a beautiful opening poem written and performed specifically for the Barnesville community by Jehan Knight. This performance provided a powerful start to our celebration, setting a tone of reflection and unity for the festivities to follow.

A Feast of Flavors and Traditions

The spirit of "Support" was on full display during our potluck-style dinner. From heritage recipes passed down through generations to favorite international store-bought treats, the diversity of flavors was incredible.
In keeping with our inclusive mission, we were honored to have families observing Ramadan break their fast with the community. To ensure all guests felt at home, a dedicated prayer space was provided in one of our classrooms, reflecting the "Supportive" environment we strive to maintain for every individual.

Exploring the World via Country Tables

Our "Cross-Curricular" approach to learning was brought to life through interactive country tables hosted by our families. Each station offered a unique experience:
  • Greece: Visitors explored the "birthplace of Western Theater," complete with traditional komboloi (worry beads) to take home.
  • Italy: This table showcased the "Three Pillars" of Italian contribution—History, Science, and Art—alongside iconic Moka pots and football culture.
  • Kenya: Students learned about the "Big Five" wildlife and the legacy of Wangari Maathai amidst vibrant textiles.
  • Jamaica: The "Guess the Treat" game and colorful displays brought a lively energy to the room.
  • China: Families engaged with the "Four Treasures of the Study" and the artistry of traditional lion dance masks.

Leadership and Gratitude

An event of this magnitude is a true collective effort. We extend a huge round of kudos to Catie Trombley for her outstanding leadership as the event chair. Her vision and thoughtful planning elevated International Night to the next level, creating a warm, engaging experience for everyone.
We also want to thank the many:
  • Volunteers and Performers whose energy brought the night to life.
  • Families and Friends who hosted tables and shared their heritage.
  • Teachers and Staff who support the development of excellence in each of us every day.

Join Us Next Time

International Night beautifully showcased the diversity and spirit that make Barnesville so special. If you couldn't make it this year, we invite you to join us for our next community event to see firsthand why "You Belong" here.
