Building Connections Across Grades: Barnesville’s Buddy Program
Kay'La Portee
At Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences, learning goes beyond the classroom—it extends into the relationships students build with one another. One of the most cherished traditions that fosters this sense of community is the Buddy Program, which pairs younger students with older students to create lasting bonds across grade levels.
Through the Buddy Program, younger children gain a sense of comfort and belonging, knowing they have a “big-kid” friend who looks out for them. They eagerly look forward to seeing their older buddies during special activities, assemblies, and school events. This connection gives our youngest learners the confidence to explore and grow, supported by a trusted friend just a few grades ahead.
For older students, the Buddy Program provides genuine opportunities to serve as role models and leaders. They take pride in guiding and encouraging their younger buddies, whether it’s lending a helping hand, sharing a smile in the hallway, or leading an activity. The experience strengthens their sense of responsibility and highlights the value of kindness, patience, and leadership.
The Buddy Program is more than just a school tradition—it’s a reflection of Barnesville’s commitment to building a supportive, inclusive community where every student feels connected. By nurturing these meaningful relationships, we help students develop empathy, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging that lasts well beyond the school year.
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
