Teacher Highlight: Ms. Jamie Hottle | Middle School Language Arts Teacher at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences
Kay'La Portee
This year, Barnesville was lucky to welcome Jamie Hottle, a passionate educator with over two decades of experience in education. Though it’s her first year at Barnesville, Ms. Hottle brings a wealth of knowledge and heart to the classroom, having spent 20 years teaching reading and language arts and a year as a librarian. Her journey has taken her through Virginia, West Virginia, and now Maryland, but one thing remained constant: her deep love for her middle school students. “I’ve taught a range of grades – even spent time with younger learners as a librarian – but middle school has my heart,” Jamie shares.
When asked about the most rewarding part of teaching at Barnesville, she’s quick to highlight two things: “First, my wonderful work family,” she says. “My middle school teaching crew and administrators are overwhelmingly supportive.” And second? “The kids, of course! They’re curious, eager to learn, and what I love most – they’re free to be themselves here.”
Ms. Hottle’s commitment to her students is rooted in the values that led her to Barnesville in the first place. “There isn’t enough time to explain why I chose Barnesville,” she laughs, “but in short, this school cares deeply about its students, families, and staff. It’s a safe, nurturing place where whole-child education truly thrives. Barnesville is a gem.”
Outside the classroom, Ms. Hottle leads a full and vibrant life. She’s a mom to an 8th grade daughter and a stepmom to a 5th grade son. She loves hiking, reading (naturally – her favorite book is Gone with the Wind), yard work, and music of all kinds, though she says, “I’m not good at any of it!” She’s also a proud cat mom to four cats who, in her words, “do not get along.” And big news – she’s getting married this summer and starting a personal bucket list: visiting all of the national parks across the country.
With her heart for teaching, love of learning, and adventurous spirit, Ms. Hottle is already leaving a mark on Barnesville – and we’re so glad she’s here!
