Barnesville School Community Fulfills Holiday Wishes for Homeless Families
Families from Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences donated more than 180 gifts for 15 families served by The Dwelling Place. Members of the School’s Student Council helped sort, pack and deliver the packages that fulfill holiday wishes for local families in need.
Since 1988, The Dwelling Place has been helping homeless families in Montgomery County with their immediate and long-term goals while providing a safe, affordable place to live. Community service is an integral part of a Barnesville education, articulated in the School's philosophy statement. Students develop social responsibility and values from involvement in community service programs and through a curriculum where adults model and reinforce those values in school, the broader community, and the world. Barnesville students and faculty participate in both grade-specific and school-wide community service efforts each year, including a walk for the homeless in October.
“When students see the wish lists and help shop for families, they develop empathy and appreciation,” said Assistant Head of School Vickie Roos who has organized the holiday gift drive for more than 15 years. “When each of us gives a little, together we can have a tremendous impact.”
Our teaching encourages students to explore how subjects relate to one another, helping them to make connections that spark inquiry and deepen understanding.
