Student Caroling Brings Joy to Seniors

Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences students spread a little holiday cheer carolling for local seniors at Somerford House and Daybreak Adult Day Services in Frederick, Maryland.
The Barnesville Chorus, made up of twenty-three students in grades 3-8, sang a variety of pop tunes, show tunes, and holiday songs. They even did a little holiday song karaoke where everyone sang along!
Following each performance, students greeted the residents and introduced themselves. One resident noted how confident students were in their handshakes. Others said that the students sang beautifully and that they would love us to come back any time. The activities coordinators at both locations commented that the Barnesville students were polite. Music Teacher Ms. Pollitt was thrilled that music skills honed in her classroom and social skills practiced in Morning Meeting brought joy to all involved.

"This annual field trip is always my favorite day of the year and makes me so proud to work at Barnesville,” Ms. Pollitt said. “Trips like this remind me of how talented and hard-working our Barnesville musicians are, but it's not just about that. The looks on the residents faces during and their appreciative comments after our performances show that music truly is a force for good. I'm so glad our students are able to use their talents to make a difference in the world, and that they can experience the value of giving back to their community."

Barnesville's character education program is built on core values of kindness, service, perseverance, respect, initiative, courage, cooperation, responsibility, and honesty. December’s character word is respect.
