Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences Take Action to Fight Food Insecurity

Kay'La Portee
Barnesville students put compassion into action during our Food Insecurity Walk and Assembly, an inspiring event designed to deepen understanding of hunger, nutrition, and community support. The day highlighted the power of learning, empathy, and service — three core values that guide everything we do at Barnesville.

Leading up to the event, students learned about food insecurity — what it means, why it happens, and how it affects families right here in our local communities. Through class discussions and creative projects, they discovered how access to healthy food fuels not only our bodies but also our ability to learn, grow, and thrive.

To share what they learned, students created educational posters filled with facts, messages, and artwork. These colorful displays lined the walking route through the Agricultural Reserve, where students, teachers, and staff joined together for the Food Insecurity Walk. Surrounded by the beautiful farmland that helps sustain our region, the community reflected on the importance of local agriculture, sustainability, and caring for one another.

Following the walk, our school community gathered for a meaningful assembly. Students shared insights from their lessons, celebrated their collective efforts, and brainstormed more ways to help those in need.

As part of this initiative, Barnesville participates in a school-wide food drive in partnership with WUMCO INC, a local food bank and emergency assistance organization. All donations collected will go directly toward helping families in the Montgomery County area who are experiencing food insecurity.

Through this collaboration, our students learned that even small actions — a donated can, a shared fact, a few steps taken together — can make a real difference. The event was a wonderful reminder that when we walk with purpose and learn with heart, we strengthen both our community and our sense of responsibility to others.
