Teacher Highlight: Ms. Cheryl King | Athletic Director, PE & Health Teacher at Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences

Kay'La Portee
Barnesville School of Arts & Sciences is excited to welcome Cheryl King, our new Athletic Director and PE & Health Teacher. With over two decades of experience inspiring students through movement, teamwork, and wellness, Cheryl brings passion, energy, and a strong sense of community to our school.

This is Cheryl’s first year at Barnesville, but she has been teaching since 2003. Her background includes teaching 2nd grade, K–8 PE and Art for three years, and 9–12 PE and Health for nineteen years. Before completing her teaching degree, she worked in early childhood education as a Lead Pre-K teacher at the Optium Learning Center and at Just Us Kids.

“The most rewarding part of teaching at Barnesville is watching students grow in confidence and character,” Cheryl shares.
“Our small, supportive community allows me to really know each child—not just as a student, but as a person. Seeing them challenge themselves, support one another, and take pride in their accomplishments makes every day meaningful.”

Cheryl chose Barnesville because of its strong sense of community and its commitment to educating the whole child. She appreciates the school’s focus on academic excellence, character development, and connection to nature—values that align perfectly with her own philosophy as an educator.

Beyond the classroom, Cheryl will be coaching the girls basketball and flag football teams this year. Her younger cousin John also attended Barnesville, making this role feel even more like home.

Born and raised in Montgomery County, Cheryl is a big DC sports fan—Go Commanders! She has spent over four decades playing and coaching sports locally, including NCAA softball, and is a certified archery instructor. She’s excited to introduce archery to the Barnesville community this year.

At home, Cheryl enjoys time with her five children—three adult daughters and two high school boys—along with her two English bulldogs, Brooke and Bentley, and two cats.

Cheryl’s favorite part of teaching is seeing students discover their own strength—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and realizing they can achieve more than they thought possible. Barnesville is lucky to have her enthusiasm, leadership, and lifelong love for sports guiding our students both on and off the field.
